This is my first attempt at creating a tactic/formation, and so far it seems to work out fairly well.
It needs strong central defenders with good heading and marking, and if you can get wingers with decent marking as well, it wouldn't be bad. A must is AMC's with good stamina and very good finishing, as they will be your main goal scorers. If you can manage to find a good DMC with decent longshots it would be great, as he tends to get a few chances during a match.
I don't change the mentality when playing away, actually I use the exact same setup for every match, with the one exception that the X1 tactic is for oppositions with only one man in the attack - the X2 tactic is for 2 man attacks. In X1 the center defender will tightly man mark the oppositions forward, and in X2, the two central "side-defenders" will mark the oppositions two attackers. The central defenders has a barrow, as I ant to make him play a bit like a sweeper of sorts.
I use the opposition instructions quite a bit - tight marking and hard tackling on players with low bravery (not on defenders though), weaker foot on "one-footed" players, tight marking and closing down on creative players - and a combination of all if I feel like it. Not sure if it's the right thing to do but it seems to work. If the opposition's wingers tend to run forward a lot, I usually tight mark them - on occasion, if I feel like defending a bit more, I let my wingers man mark them.
I haven't done anything about throw-ins yet, free kicks go for the best headers and I use the "near post flick-on" corner combo.
However, I must point out that my team probably is a bit too strong for the league, as I've done a few alterations with editors (more money to club + increased reputation). It's not a world class team by any means, but not bad either. I think it compares to a medium EPL-side at best.
Oh, I forgot to mention - whenever the opposition changes their formation to 4-2-4, I usually change to a formation looking like this:
FW FW
ML MR
DM DM
DL DC DC DR
With a defensive mentality and counter attack. It usually keeps the opposition at bay.
On a side note, I can tell you that Windows decided to restart my computer before I had saved my last game against Villareal, so I had to play that one again. Got up 4 - 0 but managed to win 4 - 3 only, as I forgot to change to the aforementioned formation when they went 4-2-4 on me...ah well - Werder Bremen waits for me in the final now...
Hmm...haven't I ticked that off again? I used to have the AMC with the best heading as target man, but I thought I'd gone away from that again...Anyway, no target man is needed I think.
Ok, I just checked the tactics, and it seems I've been using target man in X2 but not in X1. Now that I think about it, my team may have been performing a bit worse after I checked the target man box, but I guess I just blamed it on reranking. Anyway, just remove the target man instruction, as I don't think it really does anything for the team.
I have just begun the second season, and it seems this tactic is a bit susceptible to reranking - when the opponents suddenly turn up with a really defensive mentality, it seems to annoy my players. Anyway, I read a bit of wwfan suggestions, and I have implemented a few:
- Counter attack on, both home and away
- wb's, amc's and fw's on easy tackling
- dmc on heavy tackling
Besides that I've told my wb's to tightly mark now (thought I'd done that already heh) and I'm thinking about telling them to close down a bit more, as the opponents wingers sometimes get a bit too much space.
I'm not sure this will work out for the better, but there's only one way to find out, right?
I'm in season two, and I have improved my team on a number of positions with young promising players, still waiting to show their full potential and a couple of experienced players such as Tim Cahill and Miccoli. Above average players, no doubt about that.
Anyway, I just played in the supercup final against Chelski, and it turned out like this: OB - Chelsea
Although Chelsea probably should have bagged a goal or two, my team also had a few really good chances saved by Cech, so on that account it wasn't an unfair result.
