Well as I can see, theory about how "pass/width/tempo should be at same notch" is widely accepted...but I just cant agree with that.
Short passing works better with slower tempo (and narrower formation)....yeah....basicly...
That means very possesional style with many passes before smth happens. It is football which is typical Brazilian, played decades ago. Nowdays Barca plays smth like that (but defintly not narrow). And we saw what happened against Liverpool. Barca wouldnt win if 5 more games were played. Very old school for me.
...............ok now you'll probaly say, that is RE, what its got to do with the game.....................
Im giving examples from real life, becouse, evrbdy could understand what Im talking about.
On the other hand we got Arsnals aproach. Also playing very short ball football, but they want ball to move as quickly as it is posibile. So it is basicly very direct phylosphy, but playing feet to feet with two touches. Extremly hard to develop.
Arsenal really doesnt play wide formation. They are getting their necessary width by full backs playing on the line, but wingers playing much more like attacking midfielders/ free roles, with a lot of freedom. (Thats why Wengers insisted on signing Hleb and Rosicky so much).
With lot of changing (I would rather say mixing) positions and counter attacks, you get atomic football Arsenal is playing. It is definitly football of the future. Man united plays similar.
Than there is Mourinho counter attacking approach. He doesnt matter the ball is playing short or long. Just to launch the counter. When it cannot happen, play possesional. Very simple and effective. And taking advantage of Drogbas ability, of course.
That were three diffrent styles of football. Differnt in passing, width and tempo. Quite same thing is in FM. In my opinion 6,7,8 notches (passing bar) is quite direct passing. And believe that IA is never going more than that (check how many headers your strikers have, compare it to AI...). And thats good, couse evrth over is just kick and run football. Inpropriate for best leagues.
I think you're referring to wwfan's framworks and theorems and yes you're correct that in some cases you can mix them up a notch. I think what wwfan was aiming for was a British style 4-4-2 and that is what he explains in his thread. Noone has said it's a definate way to play but it is quite effective from the results I have seen. Personally I mix passing a bit (more direct in defence and short up front) link tempo to CF and play wide so I can get full width of the pitch and that also makes it possible to get more space in and around the players to pass.
