I have created tactics that work very well in FM2007. At first, I had some problems in premier league, but adjusting my winning strategies from Spain, I have been able to conquer England also.
However, tactics that I've been using aren't completely satisfactory. They include some elements that I really don't want my team to do. To me, style of play is even more important than actual result. So yesterday I started working on a tactics that would please me also in that sense. Haven't got that far yet, and I thought it could be fun to get some ideas from tactigal gurus here at tactics section. I have also been checking some of the most popular tactics here and succesful as they might be, they are not completely something I want.
What I want my team instructions to be: (absolute requirements):
Short passing
No counter attack
Attacks should also sometimes come from center, not only wingers running the ball and then crossing the ball
Not too defensive
I personally dislike counter attack tactics. I want my team to play like Barcelona at their best, or like Ajax did in their golden years early 90s.
How I want my team to perform
high percentage of possession generally
high percentage of passes complete
Hopefully also winning some games
I like 3-2 win more than 1-0 win :p
Other things worth mentioning
I use fast and agile strikers with high dribbling (South american style attackers). I don't generally like strong target men type of players like Luca Toni or Emile Heskey.
Same goes with full backs. Fast and attacking minded players like Roberto Carlos and Cafu.
In midfield center I use players with high creativity and passing. I normally use 2 MC's and one of them has also good defensive stats with defensive mentality. (2 MC's is not required in any way, in fact having a diamond formation would suit me very well)
Some thoughts how this could work
I've always tried to build my tactics with logic and here are some observations how this could work (feel free to debate me here)
- short passing game bases on midfield domination. That means team should have quite high defensive line and therefore probably use offside trap to succeed against counter attack strategies.
- Players cant be too far apart. Hard to make short passing to work then. (unlike in counter attack where it should be the opposite. Direct passing with strikers waiting as high as possible passes from deep own half)
- Formation should be quite wide. This is something I am not so sure about though...
- Tempo should be quite low. Counter attack bases on fast attacks with just a couple of passes whereas dominating tactic builds situations generally slower.
If somebody is willing to work on this, I would appreciate it. If somebody already has a tactic, that thinks fills my requirements, feel free to post it (sorry if I have missed it in tactics session).
That's about it, I will also work on my tactics and post here if I get them to work!
Maybe you can help me and I help you. The only difference in the style you describe is I play fast football. I think slow football is better suited to a 4 4 2 direct style rather than a short up the middle passing game.
DOne some testing now and to say it mildly, I am bit annoyed. I do have more possesion, my passing percentage is ok-good, I have average shots on goals but something is definately missing. My tactic looks like this:
-My overall mentality is first notch to attacking.
-Passing style for everybody is short, for MCs and FCs it is very short.
-Tempo is first notch on the slow
-Closing down for everybody is high, except my more attacking striker which has it very low.
-Width is 3 notches above normal.
-Creative freedom is low for defenders, high for wingers and more attacking MC and "playmaker forward".
-Tackling is hard for defenders, normal for rest except my striker has easy.
Mentalities:
DCs: 5-6
DL/DR: 10
MC(defensive): 6
MC(attacking): 14
AML: 15
AMR: 15
FC (playmaker): 12
FC (striker): 17
So overall I see positive signs but overall it is not yet working. My strikers just don't get good chances eventho they are top class (like my whole team).

Im certainly no expert, but it seems that there might be too large a gap between the mentalities of your FC's. This can cause them to not work together very well.
Secondly, I have used this formation in lower leagues and found that I couldn't make it work with a slower game. It seems better suited for a higher paced game unless opponent is really coming at you and you back down your team mentality and go slow and short.
Just some of my minor experiences. Hope you find what you are looking for.

Thanks for the ideas. I will try faster tempo now and see if it changes something. Also trying actually to set my skillful attackers to maybe even bit defensive so they are part of the game more. Lets see!
