If anybody has noticed, I have been building a short passing game tactic. Recently I have been able to make it so successful that I had to change in match options to watch "extended" instead of only "key" when watching a match. Simply said, my team plays beautiful, short passing game with lots of domination and good passing percentage. In home games I have only lost 2 points and even that was very unlucky. In about 25 games homes during the season I conceded about 5 goals and made about 60. For example I won both ManU and Chelsea 3-0 and they had total 5 shots alltogether with 1 on goal.
However, all is not well. In away games, my team decides that they stop playing nicely alltogether. Passing percentage goes down by 10%, possession goes down 5-10% and results are often poor, to put it nicely.
I understand perfectly well that away games are tougher. But c'mon. I am facing Barnsley(!) away, bookers give them 12-1 for winning and suprise suprise, my team is totally impotent and they win 2-1. It seems that FM07 is telling a clear message. You can't play nice football away even teams that are very very poor compared to your team.
I used to play with high tempo, direct game. My defenders had very defensive mentality, defensive line deep and my attackers and wingers had very attacking mentality. This tactic works very well in both home and away.
I could ofcourse decide that I use my direct tactic away and my "team plays like ajax in early 90s" tactics at home. But the point is I dont want to. If I look at some great teams like Barcelona now, they dont change their tactic to defensive counter attack away at home. Maybe they do play bit more defensively away against teams like Valencia and Real, but even then not significantly. As I do, I change tactics away a bit, but not much.
I could also accept that I dominate games away from home, but since poor teams put 11 men behind the ball, I have sometimes trouble scoring since I don't get into penalty area easily. Then they launch a long ball to single striker who scores. But that's not what is happening. Having possession of 52% or something like that isn't realistic when you meet a a much worse team who plays direct / long passing with counter attack even if they are at home.
Well, have to go back to working my away tactics, just wanted to vent my frustration a bit.
I find it funny that you mention making the step from 'key' to 'extended' highlights to get your tactic working well. That's some serious graft right there. Well played.
I only feel that you need a away tactic in the epl.
Playing Barcelona you can play short passing all the time , the same goes for italy.
I use the "one" tactic for my italian teams, but when playing in england with my one team tactic, I get blown away.
A small adjustment should be enough to win away games in the epl and not a new away tactic , where you defend against teams like Watford and the rest of the bottom teams in the epl
I'm with you mate. I love my teams to play 'sexy' football but unless you have a team full of 19+ in the passing and creativity departments you're stumped.
Apparently SI have made it so that slower shorter tactics work in Italy because thats how the Italians play and quicker more direct tactics work in England because thats how it is in the Prem.
Do you play with width and playing down the flanks? I've tried a narrow 442 which got my Villa team 2nd in the 1st season (beaten on the final day by Chelski) but i'm really struggling this season and therefore here I am in the tactics forum.

That's not true... not yet anyway. Many people want the game to reflect this in the future as it would make the game more realistic and enhance it greatly.
But in the current game this has not as yet been implemented in any way.

Do you know that for sure ? Seems like short/ slow works better in Italy
We had a huge discussion about it in GQ about 2/3 weeks ago. The general consensus is that it SHOULD be in the game but Ackter (I think it was him anyway) confirmed that nothing like that is currently in there.

If you look in editor you'll see that most of Italian/Spanish....managers are allmost entirely blank. What I want to say is they dont have any attributes in their width, tempo, D-line.....
I always do it by my self as well with many many players who are blank...takes time (I know you can download it, not good what I saw)...works good to me....

I play very wide (2 notches from max) and I use mixed. I dont want to play only from flanks, cause I want "total football". Not only crosses to box and a striker with good jumping and heading. Thats why my AML and AMR have arrows to FC.
At home this goes perfectly...even in England. (I haven't yet tested this tactics anywhere else) Doesnt matter if I am playing against attacking or defending side. If only it would work even against poor teams away.

I have to disagree with teh PRM comment. I have witnessed an entire season of every team seeming to play short passing game, according to my scouts (after one season I got suspicious and put another scout on next opposition as well). As ManU I can still sometimes outplay them with short passing, but oddly enough my opponents hardly ever play direct.
