I decided to take over a poor international team also. England. I used attacking tactics...and amazingly started winning. I guess they weren't so bad but their manager kept trying to defend a 1-0 lead for 60 or more minutes each game.

I was once the Scotland manager in the CM verison 03/04 and qualitfied for every major tournement from 2002 to 2016, Reached the semi-finals twice and 2 quarter finals not bad for a team of not great players, funny enough the SFA alsways said they were satisfied with my work!

The mention of Fiji reminded me of a RL incident from the 80s.
Buckingham Town hired a former manager of the Fijian team, to lead them to glory. A month later, the reference came back from the Fiji FA, saying that they had never heard of the chap! He was duly dismissed.

Andy - I applied for the job when I noticed it was vacant and after a long wait, about half a season if memory serves, I got the gig. The good thing was I had seen the real life Fiji side just prior in the Oceanic Championships and new a few of the players. However, except for the NSL level players, the others seemed to only have the correct name but wrong positions, age etc.

I tried international management a couple of times, but never really liked it. As to the Fiji team though. I doubt that they really know of something like positions or even can remember their dates of birth correctly. Lots of African players for example also have changing ages all the time. Especially when it comes to eligibility for tournaments or contract negotiations (and durations). |

Got to see the Aussies trash a few teams and some tight battles between island nations. Saw one of my favourite ever sporting moments at the Fiji v Vanuatu game.
The Vanuatan keeper who had had a great game till this point cleared the ball straight to the massive Fijian striker who also had a enormous knee brace. He ran at goal and from right in front took a massive swing only to almost completely miss the ball. He got enough on the ball to see it bobble slowly through the keepers legs. The look of absolute joy on that big fellas face and the look of horror on the keepers face was such a contrast. Their looks will stay with me forever.
When I became manager the big guy was in the team but he was a left back.
