I'm originally a hockey fan who started playing CM4 and have bought every game since (wanted to see what SI was all about when they bought EHM)
Ever since I started, I for some reason have been drawn to Boston Utd, and always play them as my first time. I've never been able to do much but use them as a stepping stone until this season. Somehow I managed to win league 2 and am moving on to league 1, and am wondering what steps I should go about to try and improve my team for the enhanced level of competition. My wage bill is still small, and my transfer budget is still miniscule.
Anyways, Just wondering if anyone has any tips for handling promotion without getting knocked right back down.
But please read the forum header - we don't give tips of any kind in this forum. Golden Rule. If you want tips the other fora such a Tactics, GPG can help.
Oh no, I don't want tactics tips, I've managed to piece together a strategy I like. I was mostly wondering what to expect when promoting a team that in all likely hood doesen't deserve promotion
Since some of you guys seem to know each other's history of management, let me go into mine.
As I said, I started out on CM4, with the Pilgrims. I only was able to play 3 seasons at the time, and basically toiled at mid table for all three years.
I upgraded to CM03/04, and again started off with the Pilgrims. I spent 3 years at mid table once again, then was offered a job at a Div 2 team the next season (cardiff, i think) and a year later was offered up to a Div 1 team.
My goals are to get the Pilgrims as high as I can, as well as win a managerial position with an international team. I'm also kind of intrigued by the idea of managing an MLS side. I'm playing with 4 divisions of England, the top spanish, german, and MLS availible.
As a rule of thumb I normally say that a team that's promoted are good enough with the same squad to finish above the bottom quarter of the next division up.
It only takes a few semi-decent signings and loans to have you vying for promotion again.

Except when you reach the Premiership, in which case there seems to always be a big gap in quality.
In FM, the Championship is very tough if you've come up from the lower leagues with a small team (it's OK if you've taken over an underachieving club).
You're celebrating being able to pay a player £3k p/w, when you notice other sides have someone listed as a "back up player" on £50k p/w. Then you cry.
The jump from B to A in Italy is the worst that I've come across. The first season up, I lost every game against the top 8!
