So I'm a retired player returned to my home town of Droitwich, Worcestershire for a quiet life when a strange Egyptian business man, Ramesses Usermaatre, approaches me about managing the newly formed Droitwich Spartans: a team owned and financed by the aforementioned Mr Usermaatre.
A little skeptical I heard him out: basically, the deal was that Mr Usermaatre would finance the team to the tune of £100,000 pounds in their inaugrual season the Nationwide Conference North.
Well, after a bit of thought I was going to go for it. I mean why not, its not my money, right?
Perhaps a bit more thought was required. I turned up for work and found that the "team" had only one registered player and no staff!! And with £50,000 in the kitty I'd need to buy a whole new team!!!
Touble is, what semi-professional footballer, let alone wily old pro, would want to join a team no one, and I do mean, no one had even heard of.
A several weeks of fruitless searching, aside from a few free agents, I'm resigned to searching for players in the very lower darkest regions of amatuer football: Southern League anyone?
After three friendly defeats to Alvechurch, Malvern and AFC Wimbledon morale was pretty low.
It was at this lowest point of dispair that the footballing gods must have began to feel some pity as I secured the season long loan of two MK Dons reserves, *No player naming*. Not much but its a start.
With the season opener at Worksop looming my meager squad hopes rested on a free agent signing midfielder *No player naming* who had some creative attributes that might just make the mighty Droitwich Spartans resemble a football team.
With several last minute signings from the likes of Staines, Salisbury and Hampton & Richmond on board it was time. Time to face the one supporter and his dog on the glorious King George's Playing Fields for what was sure to be a historic season.
But alas, nine games into the inaugrual season and after opening with six consecutive defeats the Droitwich Spartans sat rooted firmly to the bottom of the Nationwide Conference North following demoralising defeats to Worksop, Lancaster City, Ashton Utd, Vauxhall Motors, Runcorn FC Halton and hated rivals Worcester City and an FA Cup Second Qualifiying Round exit at the hands of Grantham. However, three draws since our last defeat provided some welcome relief.
And that brief respite became a new dawn when 250 diehard Spartan supporters witnessed a historic first win, a 1-0 victory against Hucknell Town. There was dancing in the streets of Droitwich after the Spartans moved off the foot of the table for the first time.
