The best way to get yor reserves playing is to arrange weekly games between your reserves and U19's. Home and Away.
It sounds daft but that way you get to see how they are shaping up. It takes a bit of work, but I think it is worth it.
Don't worry that the majority of the players will not be real.
Your assistant can handle the games and you just look every so often at the reserve team results and check out the player stats and such.
