Default Censorship; who does it hurt?

Recently I replied to an idiot who said stuff about his mother who dreamt of becoming his own brother and father at the same time

Now, while this was a disgusting statement in anyone who read it, and it was dealt with swiftly by the Mod on duty at that time, the whole system of censorship to me is a mystery.

My mates have asked what was said because they cannot see it anymore, as it is replaced with an *. I concur with the punishment the guy got as Im sure everyone else did, however I dont think removing his comments in any way deters other muppets from posting such filth.

I have on many occasions posted " Drivel " and after reading the crap I have written I have physically become embarrassed by what I have written. At no time has anyone ever replaced my drunken drivel with an asterisk * . Even now after reading my posts over again I still blush, and it has made me think harder before I post another thread or reply.

I recall one hungover morning that Jcb23 told me that I had spoken "drivel" all night and that I should "shut up!" and I didnt post anything for nearly 2 weeks! I had such a fealing of shame. I apologised and got a nice answer esp. (Iaj and Jcb23)

I wish I could delete 75% of my posts

So; If the mods delete some seriously offensive posts and replace them with an *, how does that deter other idiots from posting similiar offensive posts?

Ok I agree if we all wrote **** ***** ******** ****** **? ************** then we should be told to shut up. However, I thought this is a free forum and I think that the users and especially the Mods do a good job in policing it.

My point is this; Do the Mods have to replace an abusive post with a *, or are we adult enough to deal with these idiots ourself?

I argue that peer regulation and peer pressure is mightier than absolute censorship.

I look forward to your comments, and to the mod who said we would get a card if we quoted such idiots; I say if we have to quote them then you mods are too slow!

And yet you're doing it again.

The mods do not need anyone's permission or opinions about how they run their forums. They've been registered for much longer than you have, and they have the experience to deal with these situations.

What's more, AFAIK the mods aren't SI employees. They have lives of their own and they might not be online all the time, in order to prevent plurks from quoting offensive posts or whatelse.

Once again; no one's asked for your opinion. No one cares if you agree with the way this forum is run. It's not a democracy. If you like it, stay around. If you don't like it, no one cares, you're free to go at any one time.

Kostis,

I know that I have written drivel in the past and Im sure i will do now, and in the future!

However that is my right: You, or anyone, do notown the internet or this forum, unless you do and Im not aware of it

As for your statement about no-one caring about my opinion; have you ever thought that some of us are not so experienced in these forums as you, and that such discussions are always valid?

I have read the history of the forums, all 5 pages, and I wish I was a part of it in the beginning but that doesnt make me not want to be part of the LLaMa scene now.

If you want a private club, start one.

If you want an energetic, vibrant and in my ( for what its worth ) opinion; the best forum in the SI Games site, then please allow free speech.

As for your statement about nobody wanting my opinion! If nobody had an opinion there would be no need for a forum.

I do not agree with what that muppet said, and I believe that 99% of us would not, but he deserved to be exposed as such. My point being that he should be exposed as a muppet for all to see, rather than hidden from our view for our own protection.

Peer pressure in my experience is always more effective than punishment!

Ban me and see if my opinion changes.
Humiliate me and see if I come back for more humiliation?

p.s. thanks for answering

Actually, last I checked SI own this forum by paying for it, and they've chosen certain individuals to monitor it. Upon joining, you are required to read and follow the terms of use, which you obviously haven't done after reading this post. Every time someone posts on here, it costs SI money. Therefore, all topics that aren't relevant get closed, hence saving SI money that doesn't need to be spent on the forum, and can go into developing games.

As for your opinion, Kostis is right (for once ) nobody cares what you think about how this should or should not be run.

We are LLaMas because we feel this is the correct way to conduct ourselves, both as game players and as posters in this forum. Because we agree with this, we post here, if you don't agree, don't post here because we don't want you here if that's the case. Pretty simple.

Yes this is a free forum, so anyone any age can read and post here. So what your suggesting is that anyone on this forum should be able to read offencive stuff no matter of their age!!!

I guess if you were sitting with you family, and some one on the TV said something similarly offencive at a time when anyone could and would be watching then you would not be happy!!

The same thing goes here, You have no idea about the 'adult' satus of any of the users and their ability to read, understand and intellectually deal with it, in the right way.

IMHO I'm pleased the mods remove crap before I or any of my fellow board users are compelled to read it.

There is no need for discussion, fine have your opinions, we all do. After enough discussion, which I feel this has had take it up in private with the mods, don't keep it public making us all look like fools

If you are a parent then in my opinion it is up to you as a parent, what your child sees and does. If that includes this forum then that, as a parent, is your choice.

Also IYHO I saw that bile before any Mod saw it, so where is your argument now?

Guiness79.

I do not disagree with the thinking of all LLaMas. However I do believe that all opinions are valid. I, after several previous posts; I agree that I may have upset the more sensitive of you; like I said before, what is the point of a discussion forum without discussion?

Another point!, the majority of people who come to this site have bought the game and have already paid their dues to SI Games. I dont think that your issue about the cost of this site is an issue!

IMHO I am sure your employer has a web site and they dont charge you for every e-mail you get talking crap about nothing!

I am not being disrespectful to the Mods or to you oldies, its just an opinion, you either agree with it or you dont.

Heaven or Hell?
God or not?
Monarchy or Republic?
Scotland or Poofland?

I wasn't just thinking about parents, would you be happy for your mother to read that kind of crap?
