Hi Phil,
you might want to use the search function for more feedback on this (from LLM-viewpoint, that is).
It's considered 'cheating'.
Why?
Well, because it's not realistic for Lower League teams to do this.
Has been discussed a couple of times.

Many thanks for the feedback.
While I fully appreciate the view regarding realism, and will seek further feedback as you suggest, I fail to see how this could be construed as ‘cheating’ in the strictest senses of the term, i.e. to act dishonestly or unfairly in order to gain an advantage; or to deprive someone of something by dishonest or unfair means; or to manage to avoid something bad or unwelcome (Oxford English Dictionary) – unless, of course, it is taken in the context of either being unfair or avoiding something bad/unwelcome, which in the latter sense is admittedly true in this scenario, although the dictionary meaning there is more figurative than literal.
In fact, as this issue has been discussed before, then I am surprised that the facility remains available in FM08 to take such opportunities. Indeed, since all successful business ventures are based on both opportunity and stability financially, including the bending of rules as is deemed appropriate/possible – with football clubs today certainly being no exception to this, despite any lingering notions of sentimentality – and as there appear to be no FM08 rules to the contrary, I would have thought it only prudent to take such financial opportunities as may be available.
Furthermore, my FM08 business strategy has done nothing to increase the team’s success in the league per se, since all the players brought in were free transfers, who would have been signed anyway regardless of games being available for trials; while no player brought in on trial has, nor would have been, rejected. Perhaps the only real advantages have been in getting them match-fit quicker, and signed on a lower wage than they initially asked for.
Thankfully, FM08 is only an exceptionally good interactive game, and I shall therefore probably continue in my blissful ignorance of the realities – which I don’t find particularly appealing with regard to the “real-life” business practices of some of the larger clubs. However, should I ever choose to play it on a “live” interactive basis, then undoubtedly such discrepancies would need to be resolved between all parties at the outset, a point I am most grateful for.
Anyway, all the best, and thanks again for the feedback.
