It also helps to pick someone who has been at the club for sometime, I think more than 4seasons is a good guide.
I personally also prefer my captain to be at the back, someone defensively minded.
- someone commanding, who can keep the defense in shape. If you don't concede, thats the first part of winning.
I have heard having a striker as captain can make you more deadly in attack, but can't say I've tried it

I've never tried a striker either but I personally dont think that they would make good choices as captain. I agree with you when you say that probably the best choices are someone who has been at the club for a while. I also pick a defender or a defensive midfielder as captain.
I don't like looking at it that way, it implies that if you don't pick the right person then he's the wrong man. There are usually two or three decent candidates, and performance won't differ drastically if one of those is chosen, but if you're doing very poorly compared to your expectations (Spurs is a good real life example) then a change might help.
In my game with liverpool i had both Gerrard and Carragher out injured. So i attempted to bring in Alonso as third choice captain using the menu in tactics.
I made a real mess of it however and ended up making Carragher the new captain with Alonso the vice captain.
But the whole squad seemed delighted with it and the teams form inproved drastically. Even Gerrard was happy with the situation!

They are also usually the guys who can play all game, every game, thus reducing your need to use alternates. Attacking players usually tire out faster unless they have exceptional fitness & stamina.
