I had David James as my keeper for England during the Euro Championship. Right before the final game, he retired. Is there anyway to stop a player from retiring during a compitition?

That sounds like a small bug that should be addressed. Report it in the bugs section.

The problem is that players generally retire at the same time every year. This retirement date should be adjusted to allow for international competition end dates.
