As a general rule they should be pretty close.
If you play wide with short passing your ball will get intercepted a lot. Your players will not be able to make the necessary passes and will just pass it between players near to them.
If you play a fast tempo with short passing your players will make mistakes because you are asking them to play one touch fooltball which is very hard.
Therefore tempo/width/passing should be similar (within a few notches of each other).
I have'nt seen wwfans set up for a while but I am pretty sure he'd go along with that.

the game has been made a chore. people liked to stick fm on, have a few games before bed, but instead now, they have to spend 30 minutes for each game changing tactics every second. I have used tactic after tactic after tactic and not one single one has lasted longer than a season. Don't give me this crap about its would get cracked in real life blahdy blah ****. Bolton have played the same way since being in the premiership and being highly effective. Man Utd have spent 15 years playing the same silky football. I see all this make you own tactic, I'd love sit down one night and make my own, but I can't see the point when next season, or even 6 months later, I will have make another. Some people dont have the time. You buy games to have fun, whats the point in playing it else.

I have fun playing this game. You just have to use your brain more with this game than in the past... Does that pose a problem for you?

yea tactically this game comes good. however, at the back of my mind i hope that the learning curve for fm2008 would carry over from that of fm2007, and not need to begin all over again like i feel it did from fm2006.

I never bothered before taking too much notice of the opposition formation once the game was underway, and I'm absolutely gobsmacked how much they switch they're midfield around.
I've just played Bradford with wwfans roo tactics away so I man marked as suggested, and the oppositions two wingers switched, plus the two cms, it took ages to play the game having to switch the man mark from one to the other.
Fortunetly I won 4-2 but I don't fancy doing that everytime.
If you just leave it on "man" and don't bring up the specific player would my players mark the opposition as tight?

I find the best approach is, before the game, just randomly set all the options, and then when I win come onto this forum and help people who are struggling by giving them advice. When I lose, I don't come onto the forum.
Another thing you can do if you are struggling is exit the game, then take time overnight to "think things through". Then when you re-start the game, with your "new approach", and you win a few, you can come onto the forum and tell everyone how your new approach to the game is working when in fact the only reason you are now successful is that by re-starting the game you have gotten a new random seed and are getting a set of more favorable random numbers. I don't think the game persists its random numbers, which explains this behavior.
If you are still totally struggling, then, before every game make a detailed tactical plan designed to counter the opposition, and maximize your chances of winning, and then invert this plan. E.g., if your analysis tells you to take an attacking approach, then play defensively. This works 'cos it plays into the fact that the AI has done similar analysis, and expects you to play a certain way, but by inverting your tactics you screw up the AI.
If all else fails, play Civ III. At least the makes of this game admit it cheats.

| Not sure this has to necessarily be the case as in my Liverpool game I played a short passing, low tempo and very high width in all home games.
I only lost 3 games at home in all competitions using these instructions dominating most games.
If you have a good enough team particularly at home this seems to work well with a 4 5 1 formation.

Why cant your assistant managers aid you in a tactic selection?
| Have to agree with thread starter there. Ass mans simply don't do enough in FM.
