Scenario is thus. You have put together a tactic. It can be any one that you have made yourself or one of the many available for download. Generally you would like your team to play in the way that you have set out your tactic.
Is it possible to control the match by using only the "mentality" slider to react to all the in match situations and be successful? For example, if you are losing the slider is moved to a more attacking position and vice versa if winning.
This would ensure that your team keeps it's "shape" and would, hopefully, avoid repeated and possible full tactic and/or formation alterations. Example. Manchester United rarely change from 4-4-2, no matter what the match situation is. They may use a loose 4-4-1-1 on occasion but nothing else. They merely try to control the match by variation of defending through to attacking. The IRL "mentality" slider. Kind regards to all.

Personally I think it is definitely possible to play with the same basic formation all the time, but I think you would struggle to control things just using mentality.
Forward runs in particular I feel have to be adjusted in different circumstances

It's entirely possible to only stick with one tactic and have it controlled in the way you have suggested.
In my 442 I used only the Mentality and Width sliders to control the tactic and won the Intertoto, UEFA Cup, Premiership and Champions league in 2 years.
Anything is possible |

| 'Yes' but it isn't the way I approach the game. I use two mentality setups with different instructions, such as FWRs, d-line, closing down, but a well-thought out system should work well with mentality changes only.
As Buxton has proved.

You've been subbed for (The Next)Diaby it seems
Mentality is the most important part of a tactic, so changing it for how you want your team playing is vital. You should be able to do OK by just having a normal 4-4-2 but with different mentality frameworks, although I'm not going to try it.

basically what has been said already is spot on - you could do well by just changing mentality but things like FWD runs will have a bearing too.
and we want FuSS, we want FuSS!:p

Same here. For RoO I use three mentality setups (attack, attack away and defensive for shut up shop), for RoT I just do the tweaks wwfan mentioned.
I always prefer to tweak FWRs especially and also time-wasting and d-line before fiddling around with the mentality setup.
