For anybody still struggling with Ronaldo, I think I may have found a possible solution, based on some of the ideas posted on here
Forward runs - often
Run with ball - often
Mentality - 18
Cross, Through balls, long shots - rarely
Passing - short
Closing down - about 10
Zonal marking
At home, farrows to F R/L, away farrows to AM L/R
Cross to and cross from - mixed
My team instructions are:
4-4-2
width - 10
passing - short (sometimes more direct with a faster tempo against very narrow teams)
tempo - slow
focus passing - mixed at home, down both flanks away
Ronaldo is set as playmaker
In the last 6 games of the season, all of which were must win in order to win the title, Ronaldo got 4 goals (he had scored 3 all season previously), 3 assists and 3 MOM's. I noticed he would beat his man and cut inside, and when the ball was on the other flank, he would get into the box with the strikers.
Hope this helps

have him run with ball, reduce creative freedom, increase mentality, make passes mixed, cross often and at byline

Hi guys
started a new game as manager of Man U a couple of days ago, had the same prob as Nils, I wasn't happy with Ronaldos contribution, but reading this info today, i tried different stuff and he has got a new lease of life, cant really nail which done has done it free role seems the way to go, but can leave you a bit open on what wing you got him on.

| red, do the rest of your players have mentalities around 18 or is it just Ronaldo? Also what's your team mentality?

He has the highest mentality. Saha has around 10, Rooney 6, this means that the gap between the forwards and midfielders isn't too big as I play a short passing game. Scholes is about 13, and Carrick about 7 or 8. Giggs on the other wing is 14, as are the full backs in home games. Away from home, the full backs are 6.
My team mentality is attacking at home (about 13) and defensive away, with counter attack (about 6). But the individual menatality overrides the team one, so the team one only affects the full backs as they are the only ones who are set to the team mentality.
CB-4
FB-6(away) 14(home)
CM- one at 6 and one at 14
WINGERS- one at 14 and Ronaldo at 18
ST- 10 (Rooney is 6 when he plays as he drops deep)
to be honest, you could probably put both wingers on 18, but I like to have one who stays wide and delivers crosses. I have found that these settings in a basic 4-4-2, allow a short passing game that is a bit like Utd play in real life, plenty of one touch football and interplay. hope this helps

It seems that just by telling Ronaldo to just run with ball and forward runs, while everything else at rare works very well. I also decreased his creative freedom because his is not very high nor is his decision making.
