Well I'm into April now, and still 3 months to go til the start of the new season. Wondering if I've given my players far too much time off and whether I should have arranged a few friendlies to pass the time, but I'm too busy scouting the lower Australian leagues! Couldn't bring any of my Hong Kong starlets with me cos of the stupid work permit rules! grr

However, am managing to find a few past-their-prime brits who are happy to end their careers in Oz. The work permit rules seem much more relaxed for the English...

The common practice here is to let ass. man arrange friendlies for you. Therefor you don't need to click 10000 times to find an opponent.

Ok Season4, 2007-08 Newcastle Jets, Australian A-League

Transfer budget £400k
Wage Budget £37.5k/week

Made quite a few additions to my squad before the start of the season, an English centre half and midfielder who obviously were looking for the easy life in sunnier climes (or got the wrong Newcastle), I managed to lure back a current Australian international forward on a free and spent £300k on 2 defenders, 1 a mighty New Zealand international.

First up was the FA Cup, managed to beat the non-leaguers in the 1st round but beaten by Queensland in the 2nd. The league campaign started averagely, 7th (out of 8) after 7 games, but it soon began to pick up and after embarking on a 12 match unbeaten run between September and November I was sitting pretty in 2nd.

My Aussie striker was banging in the goals (finished with 20), but I lost him and a couple of others as the OFC Nations Cup was ridiculusly scheduled in the last month of the regular season. This did give me the chance to scout the competition though and I picked up a talented Tahitian keeper.

I ultimately finished 3rd, and qualified for the playoffs for the 1st time.

That was as good as it got. In the minor semi-final v New Zealand Knights I drew 1-1 away then managed to lose 1-0 at home to a deflected goal from a player I sold to them for £10k.

Things looking on the up though, and I am confident of a title challenge next season.

League record: P28 W12 D10 L6 F45 A38 Pts46

Season 5, 2008-09 Newcastle Jets, Australian A-League

Transfer budget £420k, wage budget £45k/week

The long pre-season started pretty badly when I fined one of my squad players for saying I didn't know a good player when I saw one. Unfortunately, this resulted in about 3 or 4 other members of the squad disliking me. So, there was quite a lot of transfer dealing with other Aussie teams - swopping my talented left winger for a u-21 centre half was the main deal. I also turned down a £1m offer from Deportivo  for a centre half who had come through my youth system.

The FA Cup, essentially a pre-season tournament went a lot better, as I reached the final before being beaten 3-0 by Queensland. The board decided that I needed to mount a title challenge this season, which seemed just about reasonable.

An average start, and I was placed 4th after about 10 games. Then my home form collapsed, losing to the bottom two, Adelaide and NZ Knights. With 10(out of 28) games to go, I was 6th, 5pts away from the play-offs. Then a crunch match with Queensland who were in 4th - the board had made it clear that I needed to win. Alas, it was not to be and I lost 3-2.

2 days later, due to supporter pressure I was sacked.

So, November 2008 and jobless. The only job available in the job centre is for a team in the Israeli National League (2nd Div).

Job update soon...

Well, I've applied for the position at Hacoah Ramat-Gan, 3rd in the Israeli National League.

Just a thought, SYOB could be interesting in Israel considering most of Israel's neighbours want to annilhate it!
