I don't use CS and alot of the tuts are CS. Have you seen some of my other work?

try to find some tuts and you will make better sigs 100% sure or try to find CS

for a beginner the bg is actually impressive, captured a grungy feel well.
as you've mentioned...it needs a 1 px black border.

text is dodgy, that can be improved (add some sub text as well, Liverpool and Spain or something)
higher the render so the the top of his hair just gets cut off.
also, the render needs more done to it. you can decent render effects on any version of photoshop. just mess around with duplicating and setting the layers on different settings
