I saw this suggestion made in the forums a few times and thought what the hell i will give it a try. I made my 4-5-1 formation more defensive by moving one cm to dm. I moved mentality and creative freedom of some players to the left and moved the slider on some players for l.shots from default to rarely. Results were
7 games prior to change
shots for/against 140-71
goals for/against 10-7
7 games after change
shots for /against 90-49
goals for/against 5-5
I am pretty glad the results did not turn out the way i feared (that being defensive actually did lead to more goals).
Interestingly of the 5 goals scored 3 were from long range (despite the shoot from range rarely, 1 was a penalty and the other a long ball knocked down and buried. So the question is do i really want my team to try create 'good' chances (1v1's, intricate passing moves which lead to close range efforts) As can be seen the goals per shot are almost identical despite the fact that the players should be shooting from better positions.
I am wondering considering the low number of shots opposing teams seem to have are all their players set to rarely shoot from distance. Do all human managers have every player set to shoot rarely from range. If so then the slider should either be scrapped or adjusted drastically. Has anyone tried telling all players to shoot from long range often and if so how many shots did the team have in total?
i will go back to basing my formation/tactics on players attributes and suggest others do the same rather than worrying about what other self-proclaimed experts believe are uber-formations/tactics.
also wish you could edit posts. Clearly my players are actually scoring less per shot now than before 18 shots per goal as oppossed to 14 per shot. Perhaps i will be putting all players on shoot from range often.

I have been thinking about this and I think that the answer is "No". I think what they do is that they make sure that the player with the ball has good passing options. So that he doesn't feel he has to shoot.
