might sound like a silly question is it possible to plsay fm in windowed mode as i looked in prefrences and couldnt see anything

It's there, under Display and Graphics.

You won't want to really play it windowed though unless your monitor does better than 768 pixels vertical, it's not quite enough.

You can get away with it if your screen has height 800 pixels, by (auto-)hiding your taskbar before loading the game.

I just play in the normal screen and press the windows key if I want to get out of FM quickly.
