You're farrowing him into the strikers area. Giving him forward runs is going to have him caught offside a lot, exactly the same as a striker would. For all intentive purposes, he is playing as a striker whenever you have the ball.
There is the option for target man to "run onto ball". I think that's what you should use.
If he's got good anticipation, though, it might work.
Interestingly, I've just dusted off an old tactic from my FM06 days and want to get it working in '07. I'm using an AMC that runs between the two strikers too. Not sure I'll make him target man, and, for the same reasons as Hector, I won't put him on often forward runs. But, in '06 he did get himself into great positions by arriving late in the box for crosses. Here's hoping '07 will let me do the same...
doesnt it depend on the players descision making.....surely if he has high descision making he will time his runs better.....i have my strikers on forward runs but they dont get caught ofside that much

To an extent, but anticipation is a major factor. Logic would dictate that teamwork would also help as he'd know better what his teammate was about to do.
