It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default Mimicking the Spurs tactic

I was just wondering how best to implement a spurs-like tactic. I'm not sure whether its possible.

Anyway hopefully you know what I'm talking about.

I want to play 4-4-2 but with Lennon out wide and the other wide midfielder tucked in. They haven't used it recently because malbranque's been playing but last season when Davids played on the left.

I'm not sure this is the same as 3 centre midfielders and lennon on the right. Possibly its a normal 4-4-2 with a side arrow on the left midfielder?

Also if anyone has tried something similar, has it worked?

Try a farrow on the MR and and diagonal farrow to AMCL from ML, in my experiences he will cover his side when the ball is on the left and tuck in more when the ball is on the right

Good Luck!

spurs don't have an out and out left sided midfielder.

so the left midfielder is always an adapted centre mid.

He tucks in when we don't have the ball and plays as a centre mid. And when we do have the ball he goes out wide. When he personally gets the ball he cuts inside.

Why? because thats a tactic I would like to mimick as the topic title suggests.

As a follow on question why do our tactics only allow us to be wide or narrow rather than wide on the right and more narrow on the left?

Lopsided tactics... this is why Tottenham are struggling to clinch a UEFA spot this season.

Or alternativley, why Spurs have won every game in the UEFA Cup, reached the Quarter Finals of the FA Cup, the Semi Finals of the League Cup and are currently 6th in the Premiership.

Match of the Day 2 showed the benefits of the tactic very, very well on Sunday, after the Reading game - showing how Lennon and Malbranque complemented each other, caused real problems for the defenders, and, ultimatley, both created good chances for a wasteful Defoe.

As for FM - I would be tempted to play;

MR------MC---MC---MC (SArrow to left wing)

That should keep three in the centre of the park, albeit with one drifting slightly to the left, with a natural winger as your out ball down the right.

You'd then swap the wing side every so often (Or tell Lennon and Malbranque to swap positions).

I'd also be tempted to give the Left Fullback a farrow to DML, but with fairly defensive instructions, so that he comes to cover any break by the opposition, but doesent roam too far forward (which would push you into 3-5-2 terroitry)

Heh, I like Tottenham... I like Martin Jol. And yes, they are doing quite well, and I'll be rooting for them in Sevilla tonight. I just don't like the idea of a lopsided formation.

I imagine if you asked Jol he'd rather have a balanced shape and a skillful left winger.

to get your lopsided tactic working, why don't you try doing things you think will have the effect you desire:

like using SARROWS from the wing inwards or from middle outwards

or DARROWS from MC to AML, or vice versa etc.

i cant see the point of doing this though, why does jol make this "winger" move inwards on occasions??
