Sarrows - What do they do and when do they come into play?
I've heard many different theories on this subject but I don't recall ever hearing a definative answer. (Before you ask I have done a search!)
Anyway, theories I have heard:

They only come into play when you have the ball

They only come into play when you don't have the ball

If its pointing inwards then your player will be more defensive

b If it's pointing outwards your player will be more offensive

Obviously there is a bit of contradiction here and I was wondering whether anyone has any definitive proof or indeed any ideas on other theories.
Many Thanks

they affect the area the player opperates in, so if needed they go wide/narrow... decisions and positioning would probably affect wether they find the right spot defensively and decisions and off the ball when attacking...

So are you saying that depending on the players decision making he will choose the best time to either be in his assigned position or the place where the arrow takes him?

here's my take on it, if u have a weak central midfield u could make ur wingers cm's and use sarrows so that when u defend you're hard to break down and when u attack your wingers are useful.
thats what i think i have never experimented on it though.

ok so in effect you would end up playing with 4/5 centre midfielders and would be very narrow blocking the route to goal. Are you therefore implying that sarrows come into place when you lose the ball?

i noticed my two sarrowed outwards strikers stayed extremely wide upon defending a corner, would this suggest that sarrows come into play when you do not have possession?

tbh I haven't tried it in FM07 but in '06 it meant they played wider/narrower then their position. So FC's with sarrows would play wide but not as wide as a FR/FL for instance.

Sarrows seem to give players a bit more flexibility on the pitch and as a result their effects are quite ambiguous. Here's the thing though:
When playing 4-3-3 ish (as an example) and one wants to play with sligtly more narrow wingers, whats the difference between the two following examples:
