I'm playin as tottenham on 7.0.2. my formation is 4-2-2-2, with two highly attackin wingers. in the seceond season ive signed modric(ist season) and quaresma, i've also retrained lennon so he can play on the left wing, malbranque and routledge can also play on either side. So i was wonderin the advantages and disadvantages of of using the 'swap position' instruction.
I use it with my tactics with Arsenal and it has worked well for me, it confuses the opponent very well.
The only thing is that it is often misunderstood, the players don't switch for one play and return right away. The players may swap for minutes (usually 1~3) at a time, and so having defense able wings are a must.
Im not sure if this is true, but I think that if you have one very influential winger or defender, the CPU may have opposition instructions for them, such as player specific marking, and swapping them may throw the other team into full chaos with defenders marking your winger-but-now-defenders and leaving spots wide open. Maybe? :]
Yeh, i wonder bout this too, when is it most useful to have players swap position?
It surely cant be in defence. It also depends what formation you got as well..Is swapping wingers effective?
Oh I forgot to mention, I was talking about swapping DL with ML and DR with MR. I believe that is the only option which will change much. Moving the strikers around won't really affect too much, and swapping strikers side might prove to create time lapses during play where you have all 4 midfielders bunched in the center while trying to swap.
to be honest. If you play with 2 pushed up wingers, say Barnetta and say de Guzman (or Kalou, or Malbranque, or Morais) and have them switch places every now and then, i think its a good idea...It creates a bit of mess. I would never swap a defender with a midfielder for example. Cleon writes about how he keeps all defenders in mentality 5, with all set on rarely, only cuz they shouldnt move out of place...
I found the swapping positions good in the 4-2-3-1 formation (the one with 3 AMC's, two with sarrows - Liverpool use it a lot on the game).
I had Kaka, Ribery and Silva swapping positions in the 3 AMC positions, with the central AMC with free role and playmaker. Thus I had 3 quality players popping up all over the place up front to support the striker (Gillardino). Any side using man-marking seemed to be screwed.
Ideally I would have 4 players in my side (with backups) who could play AMR,AML,AMC and ST/FC and all of them swapping positions. I think it could case havoc.
I've had varied success with it myself. Like moggydave said, it works particularly well when your opposition tries to man-mark a particular player, as it can draw the marker away from his actual position, thus creating space for your team.
But, of course, swapping players who play near each other anyway can be less effective.
However, as also mntioned, it may lead to times where your team is itself muddled up, in the midst of swapping amongst itself.
