I,like most fans am yet to read the full uefa report labeling Liverpool fans the worst in Europe, but like many I feel a little bit concerned by the light English fans seem to be seen in these days!
Understandably its easy to empathize with Uefa as to the problems that arose in Athens, but it would appear the vast majority of it could have been avoided!
The tragedy of Heysel will rightly never be forgotten but it seems crazy that nothing had been learnt from it!
Memories of Istambull came flowing back and the mass of fans who acquired tickets that year were trying again optimistic that it could be even better!Sadly it was not!Shocked fans could not believe that only 17 000 tickets had been allocated to either set of fans, why did Uefa need 20 OOO tickets for the so called "Uefa family",astonishing really after the numbers seen in 2005 that Uefa did not see the fans as more of a priority than the corporate machine that is "business".
I must make it clear that i am in no way blaming UFEA for the behavior of "some" fans in Athens,i was disgusted with some of the scenes which were witnessed across the world, but i do feel that rather than pointing its unresponsible finger uefa should shoulder some of the blame!
Each week in domestic football we see some of the most passionate and potentially hostile games played, the merseyside derby,Tottenham vs Arsenal hatred that goes back decades in some instances! But when do we see the tear gas,the riot police! I cannot recall the last time i watched a Domestic football match that ended in burning cars police being attacked opposition fans trapped by batton wielding police smoke pouring down through the fans as they try to escape only to find a 50 foot high fence trapping them from safety.Argentina,France,Germany and Italy have all witnessed mass violent hooliganism this season!some ending in deaths!Overcrowding is again a problem with Liverpool! "the worst fans" NO! dedicated, passionate perhaps! this must be learnt from!
