When i'm Ipswich i normally target a top-half finish in my first season, building my squad along the way.
With that espectation i get 700K on transfers. So i have to aim for free transfers to get decent palyers.
My main problem is i don't know who to sign, and when i sign decent player si have a small run of wins then my tactics fall apart because of losing players to injury or teams figure me out etc.
I tend to begin 2008 about three places above the drop with the media and fans calling for me to be sacked.
The tip for more supporters and better results; remove the My Little Pony from your badge and put your smallest player in goal. I`m a Norwich fan ofcourse.
Still, in the game Ipswich has a decent squad. Try to rotate the players a bit. An 4-3-3 formation usually surprises the opposition so try that.
There are a few free transfer/cheap players who are good for the Championship.
Scotland has a few decent players you can sign cheaply. Dado Prso (£11k) is good, but may want high wages.
Try and get some loans in from European clubs. When I'm Norwich, I always get Cor Gillis and Odija-Ofoe(sp?) on loan from Anderlecht for 12 months with views to permanent transfers of around £10-20k. They're both defenders - Gillis is good back-up, and an excellent singing for the future, and Ofoe is probably good enough for the match squad.
Charles-Andre Doudin is a good, cheap striker.
Other players I'd recommend on a tight budget are:
Peter Murphy - Carlisle left-back.
Czaplinski - young, Polish goalkeeper.
Ionescu - young, Romanian midfielder.
Colin Nish - approx. £100k from Kilmarnock. Scores about 15-20 goals a season.
Manchester United youngster are probably the best to go for in Season 1: Chris Eagles, Jonathan Evans, Danny Simpson, Phil Bardsley are all very good players in the Championship, and can be loaned for the season without paying any wages.
P.S. If you can, play an attacking midfielder, with an arrow pointing fowards, and set his instructions to "Attacking Midfielder". Have another midfielder in the normal central role, or playing as a defesnive midfielder.
Setting the attacking midfielder's instructions to "Attacking Midfielder" will give the player a free role, and is very difficult for the opposition to mark. They normally score alot of goals from this position as well - Chris Eagles scored 20 from here when on loan to me (Norwich) from Man U.
