I started my first ever game on FM which may be described as lower league last week.
I have taken over Naval, a small club in the Portuguese Second Division.
The board expectations for my first season was a mid-table finish with a £50k transfer budget. I signed a couple of players and by Christmas time I was only 13th in the league of 18.
I brought lots of players in, spending nearly all my transfer budget and I changed my tactics slightly. This sparked a turn around in fortune for my Naval team.
We only lost 1 game in the last 16 matches of the season and finished a respectable 5th (top 3 get promoted).
Naturally I expected to get a similar or even bigger transfer budget to the one I got in 04/05 but it seemed the club had been misleading me. It turned out the board had got the club into financial difficulties and now I would have to cut the wage bill and have only a £16k transfer budget.
I managed to get a couple of free transfers and some cheap signings to replace my two star players who had to return to Brazil as their clubs wouldn't extend their loan deals.
I started season 2 with a 1-0 defeat to relegated Leiria who were favourites to go straight back up so that wasn't a huge dissappointment.
I then went on a 4 game winning streak rising to 2nd in the division and also going through to the 2nd round of the Portuguese Cup.
In the next game, the match screen froze. I had to exit the game !
I went back and had to replay the last 2 games, and lost both! absolutely gutted. Has this happened to anyone else and is there any way of preventing it?
Have I ever had it happen, yes....lost a 3rd round FA Cup 1-0 win with Conference South Thurrock over Manure.
As for the update, some boards do overspend some seasons, just look at clubs like Leeds and I guess you could say Hornchurch.
Will expect 3 seasons fairly rapidly but solid if somewhat confusing start.
Hornchurch is a bit different to Leeds. They went bust simply because their backers did, rather than overpaying wages (though their wage bill was very high for their level and couldn't be sustained when the backers had to go). Leeds went into trouble because they overpaid on wages.
Arguably, but even so, if the backing had remained, there was no way they could have maintained the spending they did without immediate success, as even such spending would not have guaranteed 'buying' the title. Canvey to a lesser extent brought in high quality players, though also more thanks to the wheeler dealer skills of their holiday home owner guy than his financial backing. Even then it took them several attempts to get up, basically when a team coming down was finally bad enough not to outscore them.
