I was just wondering what your views were on squad sizes. Do you try and stick to a 'realistic' limit of players? I know it's always been a problem of mine (i get the impression I'm not alone) that in the various incarnations of FM / CM it is easy to get carried away signing new players. Paricularly as the scouting system is generally poor and doesnt really distinguish good from average players.
I always try and stick to a max of 2 players for every position, although obviously it depends on the size of the club im at as this may be too much some times. And I'm not including the youth team in this.
Any thoughts? And it did cross mind that this could be classed as tipping, if so ignore everything I said!
Personally, I don't stick to any specific numbers per position, or even players in a squad. I stick to the wage budget.
Having 100 players in your squad at £50 a week each is essentially the same as having 25 players in your squad and paying them £200 a week each.
It's all down to management style. That being said, even the best laid plans can go to waste, depending on what FM gives you in terms of youth players. It's all good and well sticking to a self-imposed limit of 28 players, but what if you suddenly get 12 young noobs come through one season? do you force yourself to offload 12 players??
Yes, there obviously has to be some flexibility. I try and keep say a few back up players though on yearly contracts so if I do get a top youth player coming through, there is room for him. It's probably more necessary in countries like Australia where I have a game going at the moment where there isn't a reserve team (only a youth team which you can only play 2 over 20s) so if they aren't playing in the 1st team they aren't playing at all.
I try and stick to my budget and have a few 'utility players'. Mind you that is fine until you get a raft of injuries and are forced to play 16 year olds who are carp!.
My squad depends on the amount of money that I can spend. That doesn't mean only under the budget, but also the wage bill that would bring us surplus at the end of the month. If the last thing is really unreachable, I tend to go for the first request only.
I tend to play with of a squad of 30 or so and any players I dont want dump them in the reserves transferlist them and try to get rid of them for what ever I can. The squad I have is based on my best 15 or so and then players who can do the job incase of injuries and the like. I have tended to go over budget when pushing for promotion but it has to be done as to ensure that the best players stay to enable me to get out of the conference.
I also stick players in the reserve just to make sure they retain their fitness while I'm not playing then in the 1st XI, but I often forget that I moved them and leave them for half a season.
the only thing that reminds me is the media items saying player X is unhappy and wants first team football.
To be honest although I normally aim for a first team squad of 23 (two for each spot + 3 keepers) I normally end up with a couple less with some people covering moer than position as I hate going over budget and I'm quite picky about who I sign. Normally means a lot of youngsters get a good run out during the year which is normally disaster ridden but occassionly finds a rough gem who plays well despite shitty appearance.
