I remembered a very dull European Cup final, googled it, and found indeed that in 1987 Lokomotiv Leipzig lost to Ajax ( ).

Well, the club originally was called VfB Leipzig. Won the first German championship too, so lots of tradition and history. During East German stalinistic reign, the club was renamed into Lokomotive Leipzig but remained a fan's favourite.
In 1990, the club renamed itself once again back to VfB Leipzig, and also made a (short and disappointing) appearance in the Bundesliga. Recently though (after several relegations) they went into bankrupcy and out of business. A "new" club with the name of Lokomotive Leipzig was founded, and of course had to start in Germany's lowest league (this season). Which they won, scoring over 300 goals in the process.
So, basically it's not a fallen giant but a side lots of people connect history with. Average attendance was an impressive couple of thousands per match although ticket prices were really low . Finances are still rather poor and currently there are plans of a merger to climb up and skip 4-5 divisions.

There's another interesting case here in Spain.
Sons of Argie emigrants have created a certain 'Boca Juniors' team spin-off. They started in the lowest league two years ago and have had 2 consecutive promotions.
Perhaps in some 5 more years they'll appear in Spanish 2nd Division and we'll be able to manage 'Boca' in Spain. |

Looks like your dreams still gonna have to wait. You'll have to make do with the Dripping Pan(Lewes) instead of the River Plate.

| Well, there's always Sestao River Club, that's Sestao Sport Club refounded by basque/argies, so it's technically possible to win ECL with River now. |
