My first try with Kettering ended with disaster, so I gave the game another try and started as unemployed.
The joblist was pretty empty for a unexperienced manager like me and the only team that needed a manager now was Weymouth. The conditions were harsh, zero money for transfers and the board needed the wages down as well.
As I don't like to sit and wait I take the job and find a pretty lousy squad and some of the players are way over-payed. Nothing I can do about that as I find out, no other club wants them.
First I look for a new coach and a scout. I'm lucky to get 2 decent staff early, but I also need new players to fill in positions after my tactics.
I go ghost-hunting, looking for players with 10 pace and 10 passing, which is my preference. 8 signings and 6 are alright (2 pretty good) and 2 are junk. That's alright, I got the men I needed...almost. I still need defenders badly and can't find anything, not even my scout can refer me to anything of value.
Pre-season is a battle to get the team working together, results like 4 - 4 and 3 - 6 and 4 - 3 frightens me.
Real season starts with a bang, my 2 new strikers plays well and the defense shapes up...just a little. 10 games in to the season Weymouth are second in ECS: 6-4-0 27-15
Striker one has kicked 10 goals in as many games, the other 6 in 8. I'm very happy.
But I still can't find any good defenders!
FA cup, after winning a few qualifying games my team freaks me out and wins 2-0 at home against Scunthorpe (L2), after the visitors win the shot-statistics by something like 23-4. I still can't believe it!
Start of November and I think I should find another profession. I'm an idiot and just now figured out that I should loan in a few players. Duh!
Done! I see a new strength in the team with the short term loans and I think I can figure out the training assignments next too. It's not easy to be a lower league manager, that's for sure.
The good stuff is that the board directors are very happy at the moment and the fans even happier.
The bad stuff...I'm a pretty average manager and need to learn why the players skills go down. But it's a long way to go and with a team with a morale on high, we can't lose in the long run
I will continue this write-up around middle season.
