Wales (Wallis or Vallis) is simply Germanic for Foreigner so I am not surprised the Swiss have an area called Welshland. Simply anywhere neighbouring the Germanic people in the Darkage!
Could be worse, the darn French could have named the place - Pays de Galles Thank god the Saxons arrived!

I know, Adz. It comes from the old germanic word 'walha' (adj. 'walhisk'), and basically was only the word for the Celts. Per definition it meant a "foreigner or people speaking a not-germanic language".
The word derives from the 'Volcae', a celtic tribe that once lived close to the old Germans. Later, the Celts in mainland Europe were romanised, but were still called welsh. Also, the term was brought to England (Wales, Cornwall, ...). Even the term 'walnut' has its origins from this, since it was a nut mainly growing in France.
The switzer canton 'Wallis' has nothing to do with this though. It's derived from the latin word 'vallis' for dale/valley. The 'Welshland' simply is the name for the 'French' part of Switzerland.
Also the Slavs use the name 'walha'. They use it for Romans (and those deriving from them) though. Compare the Polish word for Italy, 'Włochy'. Also the Hungarian 'olasz' for Italian and 'oláh' for Romanian are adaptions to the original 'walha'.
