True, but when they keep telling me a bad result in my next game will spell trouble they should wait till that game then sack me if I do sh*te and get tonked 5-0.

Here in Oz we're in the middle of an 18 month break. The league is getting a total overhaul. New clubs have been formed to apply for the 8 places available.

They recently had a knockout cup competition to see who would go through to the Oceania Club championships to play for the World Club Challenge.

Not quite the same thing but bloody bizarre.

A mate told me that if you choose an A league team in the game you play the cup and then have a six month break before the start of the season proper.

The A League is rubbish in FM anyway as it seems to have the wrong teams and wrong rules. I think FM came out too soon and they had to make part of it up. Perhaps next FM will have a good A League and perhaps add the State Leagues.

Having the State Leagues would be awesome, but I guess it would be a bit pointless due to the lack of Promotion/Relegation to the A League.

Do you actually live or work at Penfold's, Boudewijn?

My house backs right onto Penfold's. I can see grape vines from where I'm sitting right now.

As for State Leagues, would be the ultimate challenge as you'd have to perform well enough in the State Leagues to get an A-league job when someone from there gets the sack.

bigpants, I have no idea about other leagues/countries, but in Germany there are some basic facts a manager should know:

"The manager has our full confidence" means he's going to get sacked soon, we're just still looking for a new one.

"The manager will definitely be the manager for the upcoming game" - Contract negotiations with the new manager are almost finished, and he's going to be appointed right after the next game.

"We have no intentions to replace the currect manager" - but the losing streak forces us to, so we'll sack him anyway.

"If he wins the next game, he'll stay with us" - if he gets the sack before the game though, he won't.

Never trust the chairman/board in Germany. The manager's the weakest link.

Good to see that at least European chairmen have all gone through the harmonisation

Austria is different. Even if you are topping the table, you might get the sack because some other manager has more reputation and thus makes the club look better. Doesn't matter that the new manager with lots of reputation is leaving again after some months, some millions wealthier. (won't mention his name, but he just won the Turkish championship)

You forgot the 'There's no chance at all that we're signing Jim Leg'o'breaker', Oli. That means they're discussing assist and broken legs bonuses with the player for those least acquintanced with dodgy chairmans.

Or the other thing round: 'Striker Can't-hit-a-banjo's-arse is a valuable player for us and we would never ever sell him.' Which means he's got less than 10 hours under the discipline of the club.

(e.g. Madrid's Chairman when trying to sign Spice posh's bitch and his 'never, never, never' quote or Barça's hooligan president and his 'We're never going to sell that Brazilian player, do you want me to spell it in Chinese?')
