Just got FM2008 over Xmas there and had a quick game of it there.
I think the Leagues automatically selected are the English League,Spain and Italian.
If i dont for example add the French,Portugese,Brazilian,Argentinian etc leagues, will players playing for clubs in those countries not show up when i do a search for a player based on attributes ?
But i know if i do add those leagues, the computer/game will have to process the league results from those games making the game a bit slower.
Just interested on any advice and what Leagues people loaded in their game.
Also when should I downloaded any patches ? ie. b4 I start a new game or does it matter ?

You should always download the latest patch and then start a new game.
As for leagues to load .... the best thing is to use as many as possible without slowing your machine down. I usually stick to around 16 countries and 20 leagues. I have found that the transfer activity isn't very good unless I choose at least this number of leagues.
Also, choose the leagues from countries surrounding the one you intended to manage within. The affiliated clubs section of the game is excellent and you'll find that the board usually brings back clubs from your region. So, if you have these leagues loaded, you can loan out some of your players (hot prospects, etc) and see how well they perform in that league. This is one of the best parts of the game for me personally.
it depends on the specification of your computer, if your spec is quite good you could handle many more comfortably.
i have a 2gb ram, 320hd 5,400rpm, 2.2 core 2 duo spec on my laptop and run:
eng leaugue 2 and above,
spa llbva and above
ita serie a and above
sco spl
fra ligue 1
hol eredivisie
ger bundesliga
bra prem
por prem
arg prem
i also add all players from peru, colombia, mexico, and others
it still runs like a dream with no processing time what so ever.
my advice is don't play before the feb/march patch as i don't like the unrealistic shots/goal ratio in the 8.0.1 patch, and out of the box it is riddled with bugs
you will have to review your pc specifications to find out what will work well. what are they?
are you on xp or vista?? and to load players from other countries, there's an option towards the bottom right when you start a game that says "load all players from" where you can select as many nations as you like...
i reckon you could run around 12-15 leagues comfortably from about 6-8 countris and any more mught slow up.
if your hard drive is nearly full because of the music that might slow things down further. if there's any more than 25% free you should be ok.
i am judging purely based on my experiences given the spec of my past 2 pc's and how well they worked.
