okay, lets use the above as an example. erm, what I wanna do is the same as the "CRESPO" text, that cut from a white rectangle effect.
I tried making a text layer, getting the shape of the text using the magic wand, and deleting that shape from the rectangle layer, but the edges of the cut looked like this...



now that cut is nowhere near as smooth as the example....any joy?

Btw, anti alias IS ticked.

its not perfect cause he didnt cut it out (i think) - that crespo text doesnt look cut, it just look it's has a gradient and textures over it.

ya, it does look like that when I look closely - cheers plp.
however, I'm sure theirs some other sigs that the text looks just like the bg (still with a rectangle behind it)

Try the type mask tools instead of normal text and using the magic wand. Just type like you would normally but with the horizontal type mask tool. Click the rectangular marguee tool and just move around the mask selection to where you want it to go and press delete. Then just press Ctrl+d and the selection will be gone and you have one smooth text thingee-mer-jig.

Thats what I did when making this sig anyway, it worked ok:

Or you could just merge the white bit with a black text then set the layer to screen.
