Well I have great succes with my Villarreal team, but can you guys help me out, getting more out of: MatÃ*as Fernández? I just tried to use him as a playmaker and he plays ok unless I play against teams who play like this: Atl.Madrid.
I would not use playmaker, this tends to get him marked, I would also up his mentality a bit to look for more decisive passes, if he get's out of position to much remove free role, otherwise I think it looks ok, I don't know the attributes of Fernandez so I can't say for sure...

de Guzman played better than him on occasions because he never got above 7 as playmaker for me
i tried to retrain him to midfield without anything noticeable...now i play him behind the fron 2 with a farrow going between them...free role ticked, freedom on 18 and passing mixed

Ok, first off take the 'playmaker' option off him because he is either marked out or if he plays bad your team generally will suffer because they are constantly looking to pass to him.
Now, he has good decisions, passing and creativity so you should look to give him 'much' creative freedom and also an attacking mentality. This should enable him to look for killer balls through to the front men.
IIRC he has 'runs with ball through centre' as PPM so i'd set him to run with ball often. Don't have him hold up ball and have FWD runs on rare/mixed.
