When should you use it, and when not? I'm specifically wondering about with the back four, but advice for elsewhere on the pitch would be useful as well.
I am having alot more clean sheets now that I have taken tight marking off.
I play zonal marking, no tight marking, CF just 1 notch and closing down about 2-3 notches (rarely), I use that for my back 4, deep and defensive, with full backs just a notch or two more for mentality.
tight marking should be used only for the back line. even dmc's should not be tight marking, unless you specify an individual etc.
furthermore, why would you consider tight marking further up the pitch? after all, rooney and ronaldo etc need space to get into attacking positions so they need to be as far away from opponents as possible etc.
Does it matter what type of player you have for tight marking at teh back and what style you're playing? There seem to be different opinions on what to do. I know in real soccer, every coach I've ever seen has encouraged tight marking.
I play a 4-3-3- attacking scheme and the back four are generally always on tight marking, unless pre-match scouting tells me that a particular player of my opponent's has crazy pace or I may need to play deep and use fast defenders. In that case, I will take off the tight marking, because my defenders risk getting burned.
I use zonal marking. Using this scheme, I concede 0.6 goals/match (could be lower yeah, but I play attacking football) with a highly eccentric 3 star keeper and one 3 star full back.
