And now, the public release of my first version of a 2008 tactic. I've had really bad luck with 2008, but have finally found a pretty good working tactic. The trick here is that I had to find a good tactic with only a 4 player defense - because DMs are useless in 2008 and putting 5 in the back really hurts your ability to score.
My tactic is a 4-1-4-1 with basically a triangle up top. The goal is that the midfield will send balls up to your TM (the tip of the triangle) who will send through balls up to the two strikers to turn the triangle on its back and send the strikers to 1 on 1s with the goalie. The two AMs will contribute as Fabregas or Kaka might... they pick up the scraps and shoot for some goals. The midfield will begin the attack and also help out the defense from time to time.
Before applying:
*Get a good Targetman with strong heading, jumping, strength, off-the-ball AND passing. Passing is important to make the triangle work.
*Do NOT set your TM in the list... I realize this defeats the purpose of having playing with targetman checked... but it works! (Should look like this: http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/1638/tmju2.jpg)
*Get AMs with high finishing and long shots, they will get many shots!
*The two winger/strikers are BEST with players with Mutu or Van Persie, who are natural/accomplished in both the wing and striker position.... but finding a high finishing winger or speedy striker works as well.
*Heading, Jumping and Marking the most important stats for the DCs.
Please note: This is Version 1, and there will be more versions. Please give this a shot with your team and let me know how it works, and any tips you may have to offer.

Without too much hard evidence, I went 27-0-0 with Arsenal before I had an embarassing loss to Birmingham where I went to change my tactic to try to improve it, but with no consistent luck. I do realize Arsenal are very hard to lose with, but give it a shot =]
The AMCs do not require heading as one of their main abilities, although it does not hurt.. it is not used much. Think Kaka, Fabregas, Ronaldinho as your AMCs.
The Wingers do not need as great crossing stats as normal... they are more just fast strikers who began running from deeper in the field to beat defenders. Think again Van Persie, or Walcott.
The striker should be a good targetman... Adebayor is the PERFECT targetman (in real life, not so much ingame) as he can take the ball from his head or chest and send great skillful balls all around the pitch.
The MC should be a good mix of a DM/MC. You want at least a little DM in him in order to help out with the defense when he comes back, but also good MC qualities to help begin the attack. Think Flamini in real life, Fabregas in the game.
Hope it continues to work for you in the league! Thanks for sharing.
After that lost to Birmingham, I actually tried that with no success. I tried a 1-2-2-4-1 with a sweeper and 2 wingbacks with no luck. Tried a DM instead of a MC, but DMs just become useless in 2008. Tried a simple 5 back line with good defense but not enough offense.
I've actually been trying to find ways to make the MC more useful, because for now he just kind of sits there and performs the real life DM duties - which go unnoticed. But just like in real life, it really helps your team flow. I might go ahead and try a 3 back line with 2 DMS, 2 MCs or 2 wingers in the future... but honestly I cant see much improvement.
Ok so I'd say this is my last chance with newly promoted Leeds in the Premier. Got them straight up to top league but struggling badly now. Fingers crossed.
