Default FM2007: Manchester City - Inconsistency, Debt, but a great Youth System

Manchester City Football Club is an English football club based in the city of Manchester. Formed in 1880 as West Gorton (St. Marks), it went on to become Ardwick A.F.C. in 1887 before finally becoming Manchester City F.C. in 1894. The club has won the League Championship twice, the FA Cup four times, the League Cup twice and the European Cup Winners Cup once. Manchester City's most successful period came in the late 1960s and early 1970s, when it acquired several trophies under the management team of Joe Mercer and assistant Malcolm Allison, and with great players such as Colin Bell.

In more recent years, the club has fallen on harder times, and has not won a major honour since 1976. The club's decline led to relegation twice in three years in the 1990s, meaning it spent one year in the third tier of English football. However, the club has since regained its FA Premier League status, putting City back in the top flight, the division in which it spent the majority of its history. The club enjoys a large fanbase, regularly attracting more than 40,000 fans to its home ground, the City of Manchester Stadium.

Great start.

Had a City game but it didn't really get going. May start one again some time soon tbh.

Basically you don't get alot of money and there are key areas that need improving vastly if you want to have a successful first season. You can easily generate enough money from player sales to achieve this

Players to sell

Darius Vassell - £4m-5m
Sylain Distin - £2m-3m
Sun Jihai - £1m-2m
Ben Thatcher - 500k
Claudio Reyna - 250k-500k
Danny Mills - £1m

Darius Vassell isn't needed, Samaras and Corradi and more than enough upfront with Dickov, Miller and at a push Sturridge as backup. Sylain Distin also isn't needed as you have Dunne and Richards with Onuoha more than good enough for backup, plus he's in his last year and costs you a fair bit signing on fee if you wise to keep him. The rest are all just dead wood and won't be missed

After selling Thatcher DL looks very weak, so this is the most important area to improve, with the money generated from all the sales you should be looking at players like:

DL Targets

Leighton Baines - £6m-7m (installments)
Marcelo - £4.5m
Timothee Atouba - £3.5m

Them 3 are the main ones you should be looking at. ML is another area that needs improving at you only have Beasley who can really play there, Ishmael Miller can do a job out there but isn't an out and out winger, so the players i'd be looking for are:

ML Targets

Luis Boa Morte - £7.5m-£8.5m (installments)
Shunsuke Nakamura - £2.5m
Marcelo - £4.5m

Once you have these 2 areas improved you probably won't have alot of money left, but it is important that you get 1 or 2 players in as backups, especially another DC as Matthew Mills isn't good enough. Try to get a few players on loan to cover areas of the pitch should you suffer from injuries and suspensions

you can get Nakamura on loan if you don't have the Scottish league running iirc

I had a good Citeh game on FM06 - I brought to the 'Citizens' fans the FA Cup \o/

Will start as them sometime next year I suspect, as I have a huge list of teams I will/want to start as. One of the reasons I like Citeh is they seem to sign a lot of Liverpool/ex-Liverpool players (Hamann, Fowler, McManaman, David James etc.).

Won't be supporting them IRL today though ofc :p

Half way into my 4th season now, so far my record stands at:

2006/07

Premiership: - 7th
FA Cup - 5th Round
League Cup - 2nd Round

2007/08

Premiership - 7th
FA Cup - 5th Round
League cup - 3rd Round
UEFA Cup - 1/4 Final

2008/09

Premiership - 5th
FA Cup - 5th Round
League Cup - 3rd Round

Into February and have just lost the League Cup final to Liverpool on pens

Still in the FA Cup and UEFA Cup, 7th in the Premiership but have a few games in hand, my squad looks like this:

2009/2010 Squad

Goalkeepers

Andreas Isaksson
Kasper Schmeichel
Gregory Hartley

Defenders

Justin Hoyte
Nedum Onuoha
Micah Richards
Wayne Bridge
Neil Clement
Richard Dunne
Chris Riggott
Oliveira

Midfielders

Gareth Barry
Joey Barton
Ousmane Dabo
James Milner
Freddy Adu
Matthew Etherington
Stephen Ireland
Angelos Tsiaklis
Ludovic Giuly
Marcelo (not the DL one)

Strikers

Jermain Defoe
Giorgos Samaras
Daniel Sturridge
Alessandro Del Piero
Mikael Forssell

Starting XI

IsakssonOnuoha Richards(c) Dunne BridgeMilner Barton Dabo Adu Samaras Defoe

Started off with Defoe and Sturridge as my 1st choice strikers but rotating a fair bit to keep everyone happy, then Sturridge got injured and Samaras responded, he's scored 29 goals so far and i've just rejected a £18m from Liverpool for him, now its Samaras with Defoe and Sturridge rotating.

As you can see with my squad, theres alot of players there i've had to buy as backup because of all the injuries and suspensions you get, Joey Barton has been sent off 11 times in 3 and a half seasons

Great start to the thread guys!
i finished fourth in the firts season, just 3 points off first, it was a close run thing.

samaras is by far and away the most imprtant player, he just scores so many. issaksson must be kept season one anyway, and richards, dunne and corradi all impressed.

anyway, you wont have much money season one, so do try and sell vassel, did nothing for me. i bought a few young players for the reserves and its benfitting the first team when there are injurys- BUT - get an AM and a RM if you can.

i bought Clint Dempsey for 1.6mil as my AM and he won signing of the season. and i brought in Varela on loan for RM as well as a few other loanees as backup season one.

Season one team...

Issaksson

rb. Richards
cb DUnne/ distin
Lb Jordan (get Kevin Larsen if u can)

rm Varela
cm Dabo (better than bartn)/ dempsey
lm Beasley

cf Samaras and corradi

as i sed i got fourth place with that team. ill keep you all posted on season 2

So finished the 2009/2010 season, fairly happy with the strikers aswell as Dabo who still at the age of 33 is doing the business. Not happy with the other midfielders though, I expect alot more goals from midfield than Barton, Milner, Adu managed

Had a great season which despite ending trophyless, had alot of success and alot of bad luck

2009/2010

Premiership - 5th
FA Cup - Semi final
League Cup - Runner Up lost to Liverpool 5-4 on pens
UEFA Cup - Semi Final lost to Lyon 5-4 on pens

Due to the success of the season, the board have given me a massive £24.5m to spend in the summer, just scouting the World Cup at the moment but do have a list of players i'll be looking at bringing in, if anyone has any opinions let us know

Summer 2010 Transfer Targets

Defenders

Eduardo Ratinho - £7.5m
Marcelo - £10m+
Philippe Mexes - Unknown
Steven Taylor - Unknown
Gareth Bale - £8m

Midfielders

Saloman Kalou - £12m+
Joao Moutinho - £15m+
Quaresma - £10m+

There will probably be alot more players who'll i'll fancy over the summer, but with so much money I really want to build a squad who'll get me into the CL this year, so if anyone has some recommendations please feel free to post
