I have just read a review of a book entitled "Pointless - A Season with Britain's Worst Football Team" by Jeff Connor. Unsurprisingly this is a review of East Stirling's season last year.
The review I read was on the Guardian's football pages. I have deliberately not included a link as the article names players and I don't want to upset anyone.
Depending on how serious you take this LLM stuff it may be an interesting purchase.
Oh man, A book on our Shire: I'd LOVE to get my hands on that! Not much chance here in Cambodia mind (I've moved). My Christmas is coming up if anyone's feeling moved ......
Tell you my fav LLaMa read - it's 'The Glory Game' - written in the 1960s about a season with Spurs. You might not think it applicable to LLaMas but the world it portrays is now so ancient, the lifestyle of the footballers, training regimes etc. is quite relevant to our world. And a thoroughly entertaining read to boot.
Some days ago I read an interesting article about the German mentally handicapped team. Only players with an IQ < 75 qualify.
Pretty good read, and it really made me think when reading how the manager of the team shouted to one of the players to take him (the opponent player) out with a dribble, and the player would suddenly stop, shake his head, and just kick the ball out of play, not understanding the command.
The guys working with these people must be some of the most patient men on earth. I couldn't do it.
One of my favourites is "Left foot in the Grave" by Garry Nelson. A great tale of dealing with the crapness that was the Torquay side he had a spell as AssMan at. Sh!te training facilities, prima-donna players, no money - it's got the lot
I believe the writer used to work for HarperCollins UK (could be wrong though) and he's a friend of a friend. I've been hearing all about the book for a long time and a courtesy copy is being sent my way.
There's actually two excerpts from the Shire book on the Guardian site. If, like me, you've taken on the challenge of improving Britain's Worst Football Team (the author's words, not mine) it's fascinating to get some background on the players you're managing (who of course I can't name, but who now have nicknames firmly fixed in my mind).
