With the release of v5.0.3 I decided to end my experiment of playing with random players and start a long save, again with 'arrogate Town.
v5.0.3, Huge Db, Jockland and Poofland, real player names, attribute masking, off we go.
Season 1 - 2004/5
Started off, as ever, by signing a Scottish AssMan, this time an old hero of mine from the Jambos' halcyon days of the 1980's.
Two player-coaches were signed, eventually being used more as players rather than coaches, a couple of physios and a couple of scouts - I refuse to use the Job Centre until it works.
First change I saw was the number, and supposed quality, of players found by the scouts. A lot of five star players who looked no better than the last patch's three star guys, but I signed a few anyway.
We had 10 players over 30, 3 of whom were 40+, and 4 long-term loanees, only one of whom actually got a regular game.
The Cups were a pain. 12 games, 9 ties and 3 replays, and a load of injuries and unfit players...and a few suspensions.
That said, we won the Conference North by beating Moor Green on the 2nd last game of the season.
It'll be interesting to see if the promised promotion of youth players to the U-18's squad actually happens, the random promotions never happened this season.
Season 2 - 2005/6
We finished off a surprisingly easy season with a straight promotion from the Conference into League 2. Hereford were our closest rivals, although bottom Club Tamworth were the only team to take all 6 points off us during the season.
Cups suck ass, but we managed to win the FA Trophy with a 3-0 win over Hinkley, following a 6-0 aggregate win over Hereford in the semis.
Our march to the Conference title was helped in no small way by four season-long loanees and six short-term guys. We signed two guys with similar surnames and the same date of birth, so I've decided they're twin brothers, and they've been omnipresent all season.
Once again we had none of the promised youth players promoted at the beginning of the next season.
Season 3 - 2006/7
Oh dear. We needed playoffs to get promoted this season, the Team were way better than that but cups sucked their ass-type ways into our plans, three of the suckers in League 2., but we made it and shall be playing League 1 football next season.
One of the young guys found on the first sweep of scouting in the first season came of age during this campaign. He's a 19y/o Pooflander, a D/F LC, and has literally played in all his stated positions and scored 14 goals in the process.
One of the "twins" left for pastures new, and netted us £1m in the process (well, will eventually, given games played, Caps gained and goals scored), but we bought a goalie and a replacement MC with the proceeds.
About half our first team squad are unhappy for no apparent reason, and a D LC who's desperate to leave keeps refusing to sign for other clubs, saying he's 'appy at 'arrogate.
We got to the Quarter Final of the League Cup, beaten by Blackburn, 5th round of the FA Cup, beaten by Fulham, and the Final (North) of the LDV Trophy, beaten by Preston.
Finally, we had two U-18's promoted to the reserve squad \o/
Progressing through the first few divisions remains as painfully easy as ever once you've had a couple of goes at the game. I wish SI would sort it for the next iteration.

Is this just in Jockland? I've never played up those parts myself but I've yet to achieve promotion in any of the FM2005 games I've had runnning. </BLOCKQUOTE>
Ah, but once you've cracked it (and no, I don't mean with supertactics or tipped players) you'll find it becomes much easier in the future. If I were to go back to CM 01/02 or 03/04 I would expect to get my first promotion within two seasons and, in England, back to back promotions for a couple of years after that.
