The club I chose to endure my management, or mismanagement, was Sportiva Manfredonia, of Serie C2/C. The finances were just in the black, although I was £6k over my wage budget of £10k, and nobody wanted my players. Apart from my one startlet, a young left winger. I signed one player over the course of the season- a an aging right back recommended to me by my scout.
It was a real rollercoaster ride but we managed to finish second on a late run of form and go up through the play-offs. Not once throughout the season were we on top of the pile.
Unfortunately by the end of the season we were £400k in debt because of the high wage bill. Although over the summer that was reduced by £5.5k, I still had to offload my young left winger for £500k to Napoli.
Position: 2nd (Promoted) Cups: Serie C cup- knocked out in the group stage Finances: Wage bill reduced, and as the board allowed me a percentage of transfer revenue to buy new players, I was left with £130k to spend.
I only managed to bring in two new players before the transfer window closed, but after reducing the wage bill so substantially I was left with a rather depleted squad. On a side note, my scout seems to have a right winger fettish.
After eleven games, I was bottom, on three points. Then Kidderminster Harriers, 18th in the Conference, offered me the job as manager. Well I've always said the captain should down with his ship.. so I made someone else captain and did a runner.
Kidderminster were £300k in the red, and £2.5k over their wage budget. Fortunately the table was quite tight, so pulling away from the relegation spots looked easier than it could have been.
Long story short- I was relegated on the last day, needing a win and hoping Gravesend would lose. We lost and they won.
Position: 20th (Relegated) Cups: FA Trophy- knocked out fourth round. I wasn't manager when we competed in the other cups. Finances: A few players contracts left to expire but still around £300k in the red, £600 over the wage budget. No money for transfers.
2006/2007 Kidderminster Harriers - - - Conference South
Last season my job at Harriers had wobbled between safe and insecure, so I was lucky to have not been sacked. Hoping for a speedy return to the conference, I brought in a new reserve 'keeper and four loanees. However, despite an encouraging start, after ten games it looked like I'd buggered it up again, floating around in mid-table obscurity. In the end, I decided I hate England, and resigned, like a quitter.
My plan was to go on holiday until the end of the season, and then move back to Italy.
Position: 10th (Resigned after 16 games) Cups: FA Trophy- qualified for round 2. FA Cup- knocked out third qual. round. Finances: Under the wage budget ( ), still in debt by about £400k though.
I'll update again at the end of season 2007/2008, when hopefully I'll have a job in Italy.
