Over the summer no job that I could apply for with a realistic chance of getting turned up. So 14 games in to the new season, when the Reading job came up, my eagerness pushed me towards a return to management in England. I got the job, discovering although we were £10k over their wage budget, we had a good £800k in the piggy, half of that available for transfers.

The squad had a young ex-Premiership 'keeper, a highly rated young striker, three decent midfielders (one of them an American international) and some great fullbacks. I brought in a striker on loan, and signed a centre back from a felow League Two team. Overall the side were League One quality, Championship in places. Them being 18th in League Two was testament to how bad the AI can be on FM.

I actually pulled them right up the table, finishing 2nd. This wasn't really much of an achievement as the squad was top quality.

Oh, and I came 1st and 2nd in the April manager of the month competition [/Magic].

Position: 2nd (promoted)
Cups: FA Cup- knocked out in the fourth round by Crewe, although we beat EPL Blackburn on the way.
Finances: £350k in the black, £15k over the wage budget. £20m loan being repayed to Mr Madjeski.

Just a quick note- I am still playing this game, but I've had a huge coursework rush of late. Therefore free time is hard to come by.

I'm quite a way in through the season though, hopefully I'll have finished this season by Sunday night

2008/2009 - - - Reading - - - League One

During the summer I brought in quite a few new faces; two young 'keepers, a very versatile attacking midfielder, a decent young forward from an EPL side, and a defender. On top of this three loan signings were made, all of which for the duration of the season.

The season started off well, after 30 games we were second. But then two games a week caught up on us, the team started to tire and we dropped to 7th. Luckily a good late run of form saw us back up to 2nd, and promoted.

We also won the LDV Vans Trophy, beating Sheffield Wednesday 2-0 at Wembley.

Position: 2nd (promoted)
Cups: League Cup- Knocked out in the second round by Norwich, FA Cup- Knocked out fourth round to Newcastle, LDV Vans- Winners.
Finances: Under the wage budget, £3m in the black.
