I've done a bit of a search of past threads and can't find anything (definitive) about it. So, what's the general consensus about who you can arrange friendlies with?
I'm still stuck in conference (cm0304) after 4 seasons and I usually let my Assman arrange friendlies. Well, this year he invited two league 1 teams and they came (millwall and 1 other, can't remember who). Both games were sellouts. Is this acceptable? I think he may have been guided by the board as we are $2M in the red.
Sweet. Friendlies are one thing that I really couldn't be a*sed arranging.
I have to take exception to Ian's point though, I find friendlies are the way to get my guys match fit. Maybe that's because my pre-season training is *****, still tinkering but nill improvement so far (not asking for tips, just sighing out loud)
I've been tempted to start an update with my lacklustre save, but tbh I wouldn't want to read it myself, so I don't see how others could :p
I let the AssMan do it. That way I don't have to worry about the ethics of it. The most bizarre friedly he arranged was for a Portuguese D2BS team at home to Bayern. That was even semi-realistic in that we were the warm up act for a couple of superleague teams on a tour.
I let the assman do it too. Quite often the game will reject friendlies with teams that are out of your league (metaphorically speaking), so I don't really think that you can go too wrong on this one. I only really object to the guys who try to play at Highbury/Old Trafford/other big stadium to get some money in.
I always arrange and play friendlies myself. I generally play against a couple of non league local teams and then against some local league opposition or a tour. I use this to check my tactics for the coming season, to look at new players and to get the players match fit (all of them).
The only time I arrange high profile friendlies is when I am higher up in the leagues and I want to have one as a testimonial to a retiring player.
I arrange friendlies myself, and play them myself, to get a good look at youth players, and perhaps new signings. Also it means I can test my side against better teams, teams in my division, and go on European tours if I've had success to get used to playing continental football.
I let arranging of friendlies to my assistant, but I do take control over them myself. I like to see how my reinforcements are playing and how they get on with other players, what are they weak sides and strong. It is important stuff before the season starts.
