Would a large database in the long run produce not only more regens but also better quality ones?

Regens do suck. Just take a quick look at the amount of 170+ players in the initial DB and then compare it to the same amount in a wholly regen game (2024ish).
If Kipfizhs wonderful thread has taught us anything it's that the whole game-world just gets worse and worse. Admittedly because everyone is worse, things end up about the same. But that's hardly the point.
You can go 6 or 7 years before you have a single half-decent top-flight regen. And everyone else is just bobbins.

| To be fair Kipfizh's experiment was not only run on the out of the box game (which did have a small problem with regens not being that good) but was run with only the English leagues loaded. So this isn't the best example.
Obviously I'm only going off my own experiences but if I use Genie scout to look at the PA of the players in 2020 on my FM07 Sunderland game there are loads of 170+ PA players in the database.

I'm playing FM07, I'm in 2035
The regens are great, theres loads of good players around, but never from your own youth team. I had excellent youth facilities at Liverpool, never produced a world class player. All average mid-table Premiership players.
Also it does take a while for the regens to become good. I remember I was playing with Defoe and Ashton for England when they were mid 30s because of lack of English strikers.

| What size database are you using?

only way to get good regens is through coaches with excellent working with youngsters ability, a manager that understands giving a player out on loan early is important, as long as it's not pre-17. And the coaches will of course have to be multi-starred. I've had many talents comming through my ManUtd game in FM07. Great fun to watch that one guy who you immedeatly think (he's going to be a talent) burst onto the international scene and cap an amazing performance.

my problem with regens was i always got players coming to the fore from bizare places.
Now i except that any country can produce an excellant footballer, but when places like the British Virgin Islands and the Caymen Islands started turning out worldbeaters and Brazil, Italy and the such turned dry it did seem a bit weird.
Although it did amuse me for a while.

Canabary is correct... you need the proper training and the proper development for regen youth players if you want them to make the 1st team.
My FM07 Sheffield Wednesday side evolved to about 20% youth players, 40% players bought when under 18, 40% normal signings. This was after about 15 seasons, and we ruled the footballing universe.
In FM08 I'm up to 2019 and the quality of players seems ok.... maybe not quite as many real stars as you'd expect, but they're still out there.

Is this still an issue with 08? has anyone played really long on it yet?
Or is this just a case of not using a large database?
| Try to play with a decent brasilian team: you'll get tons of great youngsters
