So there I was; happy manager of Spartak Moscow, or Spartak Moskva as it would sound in Russian. It was summer 2008, there was no football due to EURO 2008, and the transfer market seemed to be quiet. Not that I complained about that, because I was happy with the balance and depth of my team and to be perfectly honest, I was actually struggling to find the need for buying new players. The only obvious concern that I could think of was replacement of my right back, Martin Jiranek, who having signed a contract with Everton a year previously was due to leave in July. But even my search for a new right back was casual because I had plenty of cover in that position. Having thought for a long time, I decided to look for AMC, even though I had three players that could play in that position, I felt the slight need to get one more. Then I saw Galasek of Nuremberg and, even though he was 35, his great technical and mental attributes made him a decent back up player. Even better, Nuremberg were willing to let him go for €8k. I don’t know why, but this proposed deal made Nuremburg feel that I would return the favour. Couple of days later, Germans come back with bids for two of my key players – Eremenko and Torbinskiy Naturally, not wishing to sell the players, I increase the asking prices to €15M and €18M respectively, thinking that this will ward of Nuremburg. To my surprise and shock, Nuremburg accept my demands for both players and to my further disbelief, the board, in their infinite wisdom, decide to over rule me and get their hands on over €30M (€11M of which they will get over the next 22 months). To cut it short, the board also decide to sell Prudnikov, a young promising Spartak-grown striker, to CSKA Moscow – fiercest rivals – for just over €14M. Now, I’m not going to judge whether such transfer policies are `realistic`, but certainly this is the most fiercest transfer period I’ve experienced in my 3 years of being an FM player; I’m not used trying to replace 4-5 key players in the space of one and a half months. But again, judge for yourselves.
On '07 I took MK Dons to the premiership, and I signed an amazing Brazilian when he turned 18, after half a season, and being valued at £5mil, Newcaslte bid £30mil that my chairman accepted.
I really wanted him, and so offered him a new contract, swapping his £500 a week, to £30k a week. He dually accepted my contract over Newcastle, and so stayed put.
Haven't had that in 08 yet, so not sure if they have prevented us from being able to offer contracts once the board agree a fee. Maybe worht a go though
By the way is Nuremburg a rich team in real life? On my game they seem to be a lower mid-table team and yet over the two years they've spent over €50M on players (plus the €11M that they owe me over 22 months) seems a lot for a side of their type. Although, they did sell €21M worth of players over the two years...still, to spend €61M on players is a lot for lower range side.

Yes this does work, I did it with Banega, though I was forced to give him 120k a week (just to make sure)
it does still work in 08. but you have to be quick to offer him a much bigger contract, also the board seem to step in more often and accept a decent offer, especially if youre a bit short of cash!
