Closing down would be how often or rather *how soon* attacking players are picked up upon posession.

Tight marking would be how *close* they are picked up when they do get picked up by the defense.

Ok! thats what i assumed.

Is this also true that Closing down is an attempt to prevent the player from doing anything with the ball once his got it. Tight marking is an attempt to prevent the player from getting the ball.

I associate marking with central defenders and I tend to associate closing down with midfielders.

Lets say you're defending, your defenders will be situated closer to the opposing strikers than your midfielders will be to the opposing midfielders.

Closing down will sap more energy from your players, as they will technically be chasing the player who has the ball. Marking is more stationary.
