Default Whats "tempo" anyway?

got my FM and rushed to play(love that game)
I like to start on lower leagues so i got Coritiba from Brazil Second Division.
Took a look at players and made my tactics a 3-5-2 ofensive.
Did pretty well for some games, but suddenly my strikes couldnt score more. Went on a 10 game without scoring!! Even when i was creating a lot more opportunities. Droped the game very angry and came to the forums for an answer.
I saw many ppl complaining about the same thing, but on one of the threads a guy said to put the TEMPO to slow.(mine was quick) and it worked!! And after the patch the same thing, if i put quick tempo the guys create a lot but score less, but with slow(dont matter what kind of pass it is) they keep almost the same amount of chances but scoring.

now, from what i understood, tempo tells if your players are going to wait for a good chance or just try everything they can. But Im really sad that i cant play quick( I like quick football) and win... play quickly shouldnt mean that i cant score right?

It refers to "build-up" and passing speed.

Arsenal play fast, one-touch football in real-life. That would be a tempo of about 16-20.

AC Milan play much slower - by keeping possession and "turning the corkscrew" by gently pushing the opposition back. That would be a tempo of 1-6.

Slower tempo means you are less likely to make mistakes. But the easiest way to score is to drag people out of position, and that means you may need something faster than 1. What tempo is best depends on your team's ability and strategy.

Does it affect endurance? I have lots of players with low stamina.

Well a high tempo like the Arsenal one would require players with high stamina as it involves constant movement.

i've always seen tempo as applying to moments. even arsenal who play quick football don't push the tempo for 90 mins, and sometimes are more patient and change their methods of attack. a constant demand for high tempo would surely tire players out and make them sloppier in front of goal etc, even if by the odds, they get more chances.

to my knowledge if your team has poor technical ability coupled with poor stamina you should'nt play high tempo as it encourgaes more mistakes.

From what I've seen tempo is the maximum amount of time each player has to make a decision as to what to do with the football. High tempo obviously means less time on the ball. So to play a high tempo game you would need technically sound players who can make decisions quickly.

Some tactics and player combinations are capable of playing the quickest tempo on the slider, others will struggle. When adjusting a tactic that I've achieved success with previously to be used with a new team the first thing I adjust is the tempo to make sure that my players have enough time on the ball to make the right decision.

Is the tempo of the game correlated to the cllimate at which the game is played on FM?

To be fair, different leagues with different players require different tempos. For instance, in your Brazillian game, the players' attributes tend to be biased towards technical, which promotes a short passing game, so slow tempo is preferable. Whereas in the EPL, the game tends to be more physical with counter attacking, hard tackling and direct passing. Therefore, you want to play a fast tempo and try to catch your opponents out.

That's just a roung guide though, it's your players which you need to base your tactics around.

If your using Not-Very-Technically-gifted players (and in lower leagues, you won't be) it's best not to play a quick tempo game with short passing, because such a style requires excellent technique throughout the team, especially to maintain possession.

Look at the difference in two of the greatest teams of their generations:

Arsenal of today
Liverpool of 70's.

Arsenal today play a quick tempo, short-passing game and are able to do so due to the undeniable technique in what is a gifted team.

Liverpool in the 70's (and to a lesser extent, early 80's) played a short-passing game at a very slow tempo.
Mainly because that is the possession game that Shanks and Paisley had instilled in the team, but also because technically gifted players were few and far between in them days.

Of course, thats a load of old waffle. True on the whole, but waffle.
