Okay, I’ve just finished 15 seasons with FM07 and having exhausted playing the game as it stands I thought I might have some fun creating players and generally playing about with the editor. I’ve never done this in any detail before and thought it might be fun.
What I’m interested in is how creating a player actually works. I understand enough to know what Potential ability/Current ability is but I am unsure how this relates directly toward the stats etc.
I’ve searched the forum but found no clear guide. Therefore, I’ve got a few questions to ask of those in the know:
1) How does the CA/PA formula actually work? For example if I created a player with a CA of 100 and a PA of 150 how does formula control the stats? I’m assuming it’s straight mathematics. If a player has a CA of 100 then his stats cannot pass a certain overall accumulative value or if you give them stats that add up below his CA the game will adjust them to bring them up to his current PA. So basically what I’m asking is what is the formula?
2) What stats are directly linked to CA/PA so I know what contributes when I try to create a player?
3) Do certain stats i.e. finishing take up more CA/PA than say, Dribbling?
4) Finally, when you enter a value into the stats should that be considered as his CA rating or his PA rating?
Thanks in advance.

The calculation of CA has never, to my knowledge , been revealed. It is a complex mixture of the important attributes for each position- for example it is not critical for a strilker to have good defending attributes so they will be lowly rated for importance, but shooting, finishing, etc will be highly rated.
The PA is randomly set within a range of about 30 points altho they can overlap with the group below and above- for example, the players are all given a PA in the game of between -1 and -10, -10 being the best. A -10 player has a PA of between 170-200 and a -9 player has a PA between 150-180
If you enter attributes for a made up player, enter important attributes at about 10% of his CA- for example, a striker with a CA of 150 , put shooting, finishing etc at arounsd 15. If you have great coaches, and training facilities, he will improve over the years with playing till he reaches the PA that you have set for him.

Due to the lack of feedback I've actually tried to work it out myself and have put together a little excel page that does the calculations for me. I enter the stats for the created player and it does the math to tell me where I can raise the stats or where I need to decrease the rating. I've worked out the formula to within a point per stat accuracy when the player reaches his PA (So it's pretty close) but it still needs some tweaking. There are a few multiples that are causing me a problem and I'm still trying to master how the engine balances out the differences.
I've also managed to work out which stats actually have a direct impact on CA/PA (or at least I think I have) so I'm about two thirds the way there in getting players to correctly represent the qualities/weaknesses I want them to.
I’ll keep at it (as time allows) and hopefully I’ll soon have a working model for the database!

Thunder God, this is definately something I am interested in, however I rarely get enough time to play the game let alone start working this out.
I guess the best approach is to take a sample of players within the editor, use their stats, PA and CA and by using this 'actual' data, build a model to predict things (Which sounds like this may be the way you went). Don't suppose you want to share some of the working behind your spreadsheet and I'll see whether I can think of any improvements.
The only other thing I can think of is if someone at SI was willing to share the formula(e) (although I can see why they wouldn't want to)

Thanks guys, almost there with the template but I'm still having a few problems. The main issue is trying to isolate which stats work in commbination with each other to push the total nearer to the CA/PA.
So far I'm still about a point away from accurate stats as I want them to appear when the player reaches his PA. Occasionally though one stat will either go 2-3 points below what I wanted or likewise above
Now if some helpful soul from SI could just assist it would save me a lot of time trying to find out the specific combinations. I'll get there but it takes time and my two year old son isn't sparing me any
Once I'm sure I've got it spot on I'll send out the template for those who are interested.
I may even be able to get the data to autopopulate the editor, saving time manually typing the values in but I haven't tested this yet!

Kingsmil, I'll drop you a copy of the template for you to have a look at.
