World Cup Qualifiers
After we dispatched the likes of Faroe Islands (A 2-1) and Andorra (A 4-0), Holland were top (10 games, 24 points), followed by Denmark (11 games, 22 points) and us (10 games, 22 points). Denmark had to face Andorra away, so that was 3 certain points for them. They also had the lead over us, as they'd beat us 3-0 at Copenhagen and we'd only won 2-0 in Athens. So we had to beat Belarus at home and get at least a point at Holland or we're toast. :o
We only just managed to beat Belarus, but the game at Holland was our best yet. We did a good job at the back while a 34th min penalty and a 70th min counter attack provided us with 2 goals. That win also won us the group.
World Cup 2018
The FA expect us to reach the second round. We top group C, beating the US (2-1), Ghana (3-0) and Belgium (4-0). Unfortunately, group D, with the up-runners of which we'd pair in the second round, was a group of death (Portugal, Argentina, Spain, China).
We meet Spain, who outclass us in pretty much the same manner as 2 years ago and run out easy 2-0 winners. Injuries and suspensions didn't exactly help us either - not that we'd have won with a full squad.
Back to the drawing board, unless the FA have already had enough of me. If they haven't, a European Championship Qualifiers group with Israel, Georgia, San Marino and France awaits us.
