Another newb to LLM...lazing on the south coast in Weymouth..
Back in the old days of CM 01/02 I managed to drag Torquay United to the Premiership from the 3rd Division and since managing the big clubs on FM2005 proved to be so boring, I thought I'd have another stab at this LLM lark.
Being as I'm from the north I firstly flicked through the Conference North, but no team took my fancy, so I headed south and chose Weymouth, virtue of the fact it was the only place in the league I had actually been to.
The board wanted mid table, as did the fans. Being as it is my first attempt at LLM on FM I would have been well chuffed to get mid table mediocraty too.
We lost the majority of our pre season friendlies but in the meantime I managed to get 5 players in, all freebies and loanees of course as the club is skinter than skint, and the squad looked as though it could get to the promised land of 9th at best. In the first games of the season we looked as mediocre as could be; 1-0 wins, 0-1 defeats and 1-1 draws. We were in desperado need of someone who could score goals. On the plus side one of the midfielders I got on a free looked like a promising young player and had already set up most of our goals. By about the end of October we were sitting in midtable when a striker who had been on loan elsehwere in the league decided he would like to join us for the rest of the year. Things looked up as we suddenly started scoring goals for fun, hitting 16 in 4 games at one point after previously managing only 14 in our first 12 games. After Christmas and a 4-1 spanking at home to Cambridge City we went on a 20 game unbeaten run which lasted untill the beginning of April and saw us shoot up the league to begin challenging Havant And Waterlooville for the title! Too bad we went and got a load of injuries and exhausted players at this point then. Finished the season in average form, but still managed 2nd place and a spot in the playoffs. We were far from beng the form team though, so I fully expected us to crash and burn. Our cup runs were nothing sensational, knocked out in the 3rd Qualifying round of the FA cup and the 3rd round of the FA Trophy. Both times to teams from the lower than lower leagues.
Drew Newport in the playoffs, a team we had both beaten and lost to in the league. The first leg was at home in front of a whopping great 2000+ attendence, most of whom went home happy as we won 2-0. The 2nd leg passed without incident as we happliy took a 0-0 draw and a place in the final against Cambridge City. 2 goals in the opening 20 mins along with their star striker missing about 6 chances saw us through and we headed to the Britannia Stadium to play Worksop, who had finished 2nd in the Conference North...
Half an hour gone and one of my strikers lets the occasion get to him as he goes and gets himself a straight red. Happily this has no effect on the rest of the team as we score 5 mins later. Being as we had 10 men I decided to try and hold on for 1-0 but as legs being to tire at the end, they equalised and the 90 minutes ended 1-1. Damnit. Extra time passed without incident so a penalty shootout was the order of the day....
They scored...we scored...they missed...we scored...they missed...we missed...they missed....we scored! And won! To the confrenece we go!
Have to say I was pretty amazed this lot got promotion because I think a bit of a overhaul is going to be needed to survive in the Conference National, especially upfront (now the loanee has gone) and in defence. Too bad I only have 82 quid to spend then as we are about 200 000 in debt due to the stupid wage bill as no poof will sign a contract with a reduced wage. Hmm, gonna need some hard graft from the scouts to find enough freebies to keep us up.
Elsewhere, The Arse retained the Premiership, Chelsea spent £86million and only won the FA Cup, ManUre almost went hom potless again, but won the League Cup in extra time but then went and lost 2-0 to Porto in the CL final.
