I signed a player from a conference side that I had actually known who was in the game. I justified this to myself on the basis that I used to play against him and therefore had first hand knowledge.

How does that differ from your real life knowledge of other, better known, players, whom I assume you would make no attempt to sign?

As far as I know he is the only player in the game who I actually have played against competitavely. Otherwise I would not bother. I don't use the find screen, stumbled across him in the opposition team that I was playing against at the time.
